Westerly Sun sold to RI newspaper group

The Westerly Sun reported Monday that its parent company, the Sun Media Group, has agreed to sell the paper and its other publications and websites such as the Mystic River Press to Rhode Island Suburban Newspapers.

The 160-year-old Sun said the new ownership group, which owns several newspapers in the Ocean State, will retain the Sun’s current employees.

Until 1999, the Sun was owned and operated by the Utter family before being sold to the Record-Journal Publishing Company of Meriden, which created the Sun Media Group.

The Sun reported that Rhode Island Suburban Newspapers owns newspapers in Canada and the United States including The Kent County Daily Times, The Call of Woonsocket, The Times of Pawtucket and the South County Independent.
