Mashantuckets' Foxwoods-branded casino opens in Puerto Rico

Mashantucket — Foxwoods El San Juan Casino, located in the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Carolina, Puerto Rico, officially opened to the public Wednesday, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which is operating the casino, announced.

Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi, Mayor of Carolina José Carlos Aponte Dalmau, members of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council and Jason Guyot, president and chief executive officer of Foxwoods Resort Casino, gathered late Wednesday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before the casino welcomed patrons, the tribe said.

A grand opening is planned for January 2022.

The tribe, noting U.S. citizens do not need passports to travel to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, immediately began pitching the El San Juan Hotel and the casino as holiday destinations.

“This past January, we made the historic announcement that this iconic casino would reopen its doors,” Pierluisi said in a statement. “After a lot of work, today I am pleased to be present to formalize the opening of Foxwoods El San Juan Casino. With Foxwoods El San Juan Casino’s capital investment of $ 12.5 million, the casino will positively impact our economy and create over 150 direct jobs.”

The Mashantuckets opened the casino in a partnership with LionGrove, a hospitality investment firm that owns the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. The casino had been closed since 2016.
