    • Private Richard Anthony Angiollo of Northford graduated from the United States Marine Corps boot camp in Parris Island, receiving the sharpshooter medal.

    Career Achievements

    • Branford artist Corina S. Alvarezdelugo created Paradox of Plenty II for the Beat the Drum exhibit at Hartford's Union Station Great Hall.

    Cina Branco of Branford joined the staff of Handle Associates Learning Center.

    Anthony F. DiLauro of Norwalk joined Read to Grow as Executive Director of the statewide non-profit literacy organization based in Branford.

    Stephanie Evans-Ariker was named Executive Director at Orchard House Medical Adult Day Care in Branford.

    Dr. William H. James, Ph.D., a former Superintendent of Schools in Branford and a resident of Northford, wrote and published The Monetarists and the Evolving Crisis: WAKE UP, AMERICANS; WE ARE LOSING OUR GREAT NATION.

    Tim Joncas, a Westminster School faculty member and alumnus who grew up in Branford, was appointed director of athletics at the school.

    Debra Laudano, senior director of community relations at The Village at Mariner's Point and a resident of Branford, was awarded the East Haven Chamber of Commerce's Business Award.

    Tracey LeMay, BSN, of Northford, was promoted to vice president of Risk Management and Corporate Compliance for Wallingford-based Masonicare.

    Alexandra (Joncas) McMullen, formerly of Branford, was appointed Middle School Dean of Students at The Fessenden School in West Newton, Massachusetts.

    Linda Meyer of Branford, a professor at the School of Law at Quinnipiac University, was named a faculty scholar for the 2011-2012 academic year.

    Dr. David W. Parke, an ophthalmologist in North Branford, was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by Aurora University at the school's May 6 undergraduate commencement ceremony.

    Sonia Pedraza of North Branford, an attorney at Shipman & Goodwin, was one of several lawyers of color honored by the Connecticut Law Tribune.

    Richard P. Shanahan, a certified financial planner and branch manager at the Branford office of Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., was named to the firm's 2012 Executive Council.

    Service Awards and Recognitions

    Tony Catapano of North Branford received an Unsung Hero Award at the Hall of Fame Awards Dinner sponsored by Special Olympics Connecticut.

    • Assistant United States Attorney John B. Hughes of Branford was one of three members of the Department of Justice to receive an Executive Achievement Award.

    Eva Jo Saddler Johnson, formerly of Branford, was recognized for her volunteer service with the Jefferson Award in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

    Melissa Pandolfi of Branford and Astoria, New York, assistant manager of corporate archives for The Estee Lauder Companies, received the Leonard A. Lauder Volunteer of the Year award.

    Janet Poss was given a Spirit of the League award by the League of Women Voters of East Shore upon her retirement from the League's Board of Directors.

    • The Connecticut League of Conservation Voters awarded State Representative Lonnie Reed (D-Branford) a 100-percent rating for her support and advocacy of environmental initiatives in the group's 2011 environmental scorecard. State Representative Pat Widlitz (D-Guilford) received a certificate of appreciation for her support of the pesticide ban in Connecticut.

    Zachary Ross of Branford and Daniel Juarez of North Branford performed in Western Connecticut State University's production of Carmen.

    Spencer J. Russo of Branford was named Officer of the Year by the Derby Chapter of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, No. 571.

    • The Musical Art Society of Branford elected Barbara Shaw to the office of president. Martha Medford is vice president.

    Marissa Salazar of Branford was recognized at the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital benefit, iSing for St. Jude.

    Clare Torelli and Sal Annunziato, both of Branford, received awards at a Mothers Against Drunk Driving Community Champions dinner at Anthony's Ocean View in New Haven. Torelli received the Community Service Award and Annunziato was presented with the Hilda Davis Award.

    Elizabeth Wieland of Stony Creek was appointed to the Professional Advisory Committee for the Visiting Nurse Association of South Central Connecticut.

    • The Hospital of Saint Raphael recognized a number of volunteers, including Branford's Grace Signore (200 hours), Marie Farricielli (500 hours), and Linda Masto (500 hours); North Branford's Joseph Martucci (200 hours); and Northford's Nancy Brigano (500 hours).

    Acts of Community Service and Charitable Contributions

    Alyssa Arre, a senior at North Branford High School, and her mother Geri McSherry, a nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital, joined Liver Life Challenge Team Connecticut and ran the Disney Marathon as part of the team. The pair ran in memory of McSherry's sister Maureen, who died of liver failure last year.

    Nicole Brown of Branford, an appointee to the Student Council at Sacred Heart Academy, helped organize the school's annual Stocking Drive.

    Melissa Castelluzzo of Branford, a registered dietitian, participated in the Walk Against Hunger in Bridgeport as a member of the Connecticut Dietetic Association Team.

    Jack Dougherty of Branford and Tim Rockerfeller of North Branford were among 192 representatives of sponsor groups or individuals who participated in the Operation Gift Cards for Our Wounded Troops program.

    • HazWaste Central Volunteers: Carol Kaminsky, Kristen Kaminsky, Laura Panciera, Alice Ruggiero, Judith Weted, and Jo-Ann White. The volunteers assisted by greeting people, handing out questionnaires, and answering questions.

    Marlena Karsmarski of Northford, daughter of Estela and John Karsmarski, celebrated her seventh birthday by making a donation to The Animal Haven. She accepted dog and cat food in lieu of gifts at her birthday party.

    • Clinton resident Brian Meadows, a lieutenant in the Westport Fire Department, and Kirsten Schnappauk of Northford, helped deliver thank-you kits to wounded troops at Walter Read military hospital in Washington, D.C., as part of Operation Gift Cards, a program that was started by Brian's father, Al Meadows of AMVETS Post 43.

    Bob and Carolyn Maroney of North Branford won the "Fix My House" kitchen remodel sponsored by Shaw's Remodeling of Niantic and WTNH News Channel 8. The Maroneys were selected from among eight finalists thanks in part to Bob's essay, in which he described his wife, who suffers from medical issues, as his hero. The reveal was featured on CT Style and can viewed on www.wtnh.com.

    Matthew Proto, a Marist College sophomore from North Branford, participated in the Marist College Up 'Til Dawn fundraiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. During this three-day event, students spread awareness and raise funds by staying up all night to write letters requesting donations.

    Dana Schmidt, RN, IBCLC, of Branford, founder of Cradlehold, participated in the March for Babies walk to raise money for the March of Dimes.

    Meghan Vumback of Northford participated in the annual Run/Walk for Hunger Month at Marist College. Vumback is a freshman majoring in communication.
