Program on poet Anthony Hecht in Stonington

American poet Anthony Hecht, a witness to the Holocaust and the 20th century, will be the subject of a program at the Stonington Free Library at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13.

Elie Wiesel, in 1960, called on writers to write in the manner “of a witness who believes he has a moral obligation to try to prevent the enemy from enjoying one last victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human memory.” Hecht took up that challenge and used his poetic gifts to witness the Holocaust as a young soldier sent to the liberation of the Flossenbürg Concentration Camp in 1945.

Both a friend and colleague of Hecht, Professor Jonathan Post has taught his poetry and written extensively about his work, as well as editing his letters. This program will be an opportunity to hear and discuss Hecht’s poetry.
