    Civil War presentation in Old Lyme

    “The Life and Times of Pfc. William Webb,” an African American Civil War soldier from Connecticut, will be portrayed by actor Kevin Johnson from 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Old Lyme Historical Society, 55 Lyme St., Old Lyme. Free admission, but donations will be accepted.

    ‘Why Newspapers Still Matter’ talk

    Award-winning journalists Walter V. Robinson of The Boston Globe and Pamela Constable of The Washington Post will discuss “Why Newspapers Still Matter at a Time of Hype, Hate & Social Media Dominance” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at the United Theatre in Westerly.

    Robinson, an investigative reporter and editor at large at The Globe, led the Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation that brought worldwide attention to the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse scandals and subsequent cover-ups. Constable is an award-winning staff writer for The Post’s foreign desk, covering Afghanistan, Pakistan, South Asia and Latin America.

    Lymes’ Senior Center hosts September events

    The Lymes’ Senior Center at 26 Town Woods Road, Old Lyme, will host a series of events in September highlighted by Mallory Howard’s talk on “The Life of Amelia Earhart” at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 25. The event is free for members, $10 for non-members, age 55 or older.

    The center has many other events listed, including exercise classes, dancing, darts, health talks and cornhole competitions on Sept. 5 and 19. At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, there will be a talk about the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair with the Bowtie Historian.

    A Veterans Coffee House meets at 9:45 a.m. the third Wednesday of every month, and there will be a special “Protect Your Nest Egg” with Ed Prendergast presentation at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26.

    Finally, at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, singer Victoria Rose will appear with showtunes, and the popular music of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. For all of these events, call the Lymes’ Senior Center at (860) 434-4127 to register or for more information.

    Shoreline Sailing Club get-together

    The Shoreline Sailing Club (35+ singles) will hold a special event at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Clark Memorial Field, 210 Elm St., Old Saybrook (across the street from Pasta Vita). While boating is the primary focus, the group has many other social activities throughout the year. New members are welcome, and no prior sailing experience is needed.

    LEGO Club in Groton on Aug. 24

    Bozrah fire department notes anniversary

    The Bozrah Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. To raise funds and honor the volunteers, T-shirts will be on sale at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, at the firehouse. Coffee and a continental breakfast will be prepared by volunteers.
