    Family and children’s activities in Groton

    Groton Public Library will host a variety of children’s and family activities in February.

    At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, the library will host a family magic show, presented by Derek the Magician. This free event is open to children of all ages and is sponsored by the Circle of Friends of the Groton Public Library.

    Other events next month include Babies & Books at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5 and 12; Sing & Stomp, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 & 14; Heart Art, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13; Family Grab & Go: Paint Palettes, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16; Children’s Grab & Go, 3 to 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26, and the Playgroup @ the Groton Public Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28.

    Old Lyme Town Band seeks musicians

    The Old Lyme Town Band is looking for musicians of any instrument for its 49th season. The band rehearses from 7-9 p.m. on Mondays at Christ the King Church, 1 McCurdy Road, Old Lyme. Retired local high school band director Richard Chiappetta is the director. There will be one concert in the spring and more in the summer in the local area.     Preston Library events in February

    Preston Public Library is sponsoring Take Your Child to the Library Day all day on Saturday, Feb. 3. Stop by to discover what the library has to offer your children and family, including crafts and an animal scavenger hunt. At 10:30 a.m., children can meet some animal friends.

    Other events include a 1 p.m. Feb. 21 book discussion on “How you Lose the Time War” by Amal El-Mohtar. Register at 860-886-1010 and receive a book.

    At 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24, a program titled “Declutter Pronto” with Laurie Lindemann will be offered. Register online at https://prestonpubliclibrary.org/events.

    Soup-a-thon scheduled in Stonington

    The United Church of Stonington will hold a dine in or take out soup-a-thon fundraiser from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 67 Main St., Stonington Borough.

    An assortment of soups, chowders and chilis including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free will be offered for $12. This includes a roll and dessert.

    Speculative fiction book club in Groton

    Bill Memorial Library in Groton hosts the Something Else Entirely speculative fiction book club for busy readers every other month on the second Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. Feb. 10. For the February meeting, “The Daughter of Doctor Moreau” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia will be discussed.

    Coast Guard concert in Westerly

    At 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, the United States Coast Guard Band presents a recital of chamber music at the Granite Theatre.

    Tickets are required and can be reserved by visiting www.granitetheatre.org. The event is sold out, but new ticket reservations will be placed on a waiting list. The Granite Theatre is located at 1 Granite St., Westerly.

    ‘Turtle’ talk at East Lyme Senior Center

    The East Lyme Historical Society will host its Winter Lecture Series starting with a talk on “Turtle” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the East Lyme Senior Center, 37 Society Road, Niantic.

    Lt. E.A. Mixon will talk about the “Infernal Machine” later known as the “Turtle,” the first submersible vessel used in combat. Built by David Bushnell in 1775 and then later operated by Eliza Lee to attach explosives to a British ship, the talk will explore the story of the “Turtle” and some basic submarine principles that are still used today.

    Mixon is from the Submarine Force Museum in Groton and is the Executive Officer of the Museum.

    February events for adults in Groton

    The Spice Club will continue in February at Groton Public Library for cooking enthusiasts of all ages. Pick up a take-home kit with a featured spice and a recipe or two from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 1, then join the Meet & Eat at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 22. Supplies are limited on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Other adult events include a Morning Matinee movie at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6; Let's Cook! at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8, a series led by food aficionado Dana Parfitt featuring chocolate desserts this month; Doga: Yoga with Police Comfort Dogs at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 12; Groton Public Library Book Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13; Thyme for Tea Saturday, Feb. 17, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; Adult Craft + Create Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 6:30 p.m., and Not Your Not Your Mother’s Book Group at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, for Millennials and Gen Z-ers (ages 21-40).
