East Lyme library activities

East Lyme Public Library will host several children’s events this week, including Baby Sing and Sign (Sing, play, dance and learn through stories, rhymes, puppets and songs) at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and Sing & Stomp (song and dance party for children and their grown-ups) at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Also, read to Hazel, the therapy dog, from 4-5 p.m. Tuesdays for ages 6 and up (Preregistration required).

At 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, it’s Casey Carle’s Bubblemania! Enjoy this high energy, comedic bubble show with lots of audience participation and humor for the whole family at the East Lyme Community Center Activity Room. No registration required.

Care & Share fundraiser March 11

On Monday, March 11, Flanders Fish Market will hold a dine-in fundraiser from 5-8 p.m. to benefit Care & Share of East Lyme.

Partial proceeds from dine-in meals will be donated to the local food pantry. Care & Share provides food, emergency financial help, camperships, holiday baskets, and other assistance to residents of East Lyme, Niantic, and Salem. Donations can be made on the website careandshareofel.org.

‘Supporting the Deaf’ program in Mystic

Eileen Baker, who has a master’s in education of the deaf, will be the speaker at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, March 12 for the free program “Supporting the Deaf” at Mystic Congregational Church, 43 E. Main St., Mystic.

The program will be preceded by a tea at 9:15.

Baker will focus on both the strategies for coping with one’s own deafness and that of others. Raised in a family with two deaf parents, she learned to communicate both in sign language and lip-reading. Beyond providing services for the Killingly School District, she has taught courses on communicating with the deaf at the University of New Haven, and has provided professional input for state attorneys general as they cope with issues of deaf people in the corrections system.

Mysticalligraphers meeting March 13

The Life and Times of Louisa May Alcott

Memoirist and playwright Ruth Crocker will present a program about Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) at Waterford Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13.

This well-known author is most famous for "Little Women," a novel that shaped the way many women since the Victorian era have defined girlhood and family. Louisa also was a Civil War nurse, an avid supporter of women's suffrage, and, through her writing, the sole breadwinner for her family. This presentation reveals her fascinating path to fame as an author and the role of Emerson, Thoreau, Bronson Alcott and other great transcendentalists in her life.

Celtic songs by Jeff Snow March 15

Waterford Public Library will host a night of Celtic songs by Jeff Snow at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 15. Much of the history of Scotland, England and Ireland is preserved in song, and hearing these stories will get you singing, smiling, and laughing. Don’t be surprised if there’s a few tears too.

Lyme holding registration session March 15

The Town of Lyme Registrars of Voters will hold a registration session from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, March 15 in the Registrars’ Office at the Lyme Town Hall, 480 Hamburg Road, Lyme. This session is for registration and enrollment of electors entitled to vote in the Presidential Preference Primary on April 2, and also to hear requests for adding names to the registry list by persons removed. STARS to STEM March 16 in Niantic

Niantic Main Street invites the community to enjoy “A Day Among the STARS” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 16 at East Lyme High School. This free family event will feature a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony at 11:30 a.m.

STARS to STEM is a grassroots, non-profit organization working to revitalize the planetarium at East Lyme High School. For more than 40 years, the planetarium inspired and awed many students, but eventually closed due to lack of upgrades and improvements. Although most of the obsolete equipment was dismantled and furniture removed, the remaining dome-shaped space remained.

In December 2023, the Board of Education entered into an agreement with S2S to allow the non-profit to utilize the planetarium space for the next five years, with the option to extend it in years beyond. The organization's “ A Day Among the STARS” event will feature food trucks, a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony in memory of Donald Bloom and Robert Meyer, former ELHS teachers and planetarium directors.

Planetarium shows will be held every 45 minutes. There will be a “Name Our Alien” contest, and the winner of the Northern Lights Gem $1,500 shopping spree will be announced. For more information, visit starstostem.org.

Author symposium March 16 in Groton

An Author Symposium will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in the Meeting Room of the Town of Groton Public Library, 52 Newtown Road, Groton, featuring the adult students of the Town of Groton Parks & Recreation novelette & short story writing programs.

Written and published works will be presented — some for sale that day — with students and actors reading excerpts. Adult students will comment on the craft of fiction writing, while also interacting directly with audience members interested in discussing the pursuit of this art form. Event is free and open to the public.

Spring story time Mondays in Groton City

The Bill Memorial Library in the City of Groton invites children to its Spring Story Time, a story program for children ages birth through age 5, with a caregiver.

Story Time meets every Monday at 10 a.m. at the library through May 13, featuring stories, songs with live music, and finger plays and puppets.
