Norwich businessman Zane Megos, who faces housing-related larceny charges that could land him in prison, has received a plea offer from the state that he does not appear inclined to accept.

Megos appeared Wednesday morning in New London Superior Court, where prosecutor Rafael I. Bustamante extended an undisclosed offer to Megos through defense attorney Kenneth A. Leary. The offer is intended to resolve the case short of trial.

Leary told Judge John J. Nazzaro that his client is not formally rejecting the offer and asked for a court pretrial session on Megos’ next court date. Leary’s request is an indication that he wants to see whether the judge will make a better offer. The judge has final authority over all plea deals.

Nazzaro agreed to the request and continued the case to Dec. 5.

“I’ll meet with the state’s attorney and your attorney, and we’ll discuss it,” Nazzaro said. Then, he said, he would “weigh in” on the case.

Norwich police charged Megos in six separate cases involving allegations that he took deposits and advanced rental payments for apartments and houses in Norwich and New London that never became available.

He also faces third-degree assault and breach of peace charges by Norwich police stemming from an altercation with one of the alleged larceny victims who had confronted Megos to ask for his deposit money back. He also has pending motor vehicle charges.
