After a recent game, Ledyard High School girls' basketball coach Adam Baber joked that I wasn't allowed to talk to Olivia DelGrosso, a junior guard he said he was trying to keep a secret for as long as possible.

The secret, though, lasted only about a game this year, when DelGrosso tied the Colonels' single-game scoring record with 33 points in a victory at Bunnell of Stratford.

"I didn't think I had that many," DelGrosso said more recently, thinking back. "We were a long way from home and we didn't know them at all."

DelGrosso now shares the record with Christine Colella (2008) and Stacy Jewell (1994), according to school officials.

It hasn't been a fluke either, as Ledyard (9-2 overall, 4-0 and in first place in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division) now not only has the biggest and deepest front line in the conference — four different players had six or more rebounds against Waterford last week — the Colonels have the outside shooting to match it.

DelGrosso had 11 to lead Ledyard again Tuesday night in a 59-20 victory over Griswold, the Colonels' fourth straight victory.

"She's got it in her. We saw it once last year where she dropped 26 or 28 in a game," said Baber earlier this season, speaking of DelGrosso.

"She hit everything (in the record-setting game), two 3s, a lot of layups, 11-for-12 from the free throw line."

Baber wanted to distinguish though that the game against Bunnell wasn't "the Liv show." She was just mainly the one who got to finish, as the Colonels tried to push the tempo.

"Kylie (Fustini), Michelle (Klinikowski) ... they were getting it to Ari (Fustini, point guard) and Ari was getting it right up to Liv. ... It wasn't a bad way to start the season. That's for sure.

"She was very pleased the next morning when we found out she tied the record. I was very happy for her. She's a great kid, a great personality."

And of going forward?

"We're just working on the little things, being more consistent over a 32-minute time span," Baber said. "Harping on the little things."
