    East Lyme Girls Win Hartford Public Invite

    Middletown — Christy Nixon, Lauren Bennett and Leah Clement set meet records and lifted East Lyme High School to the girls' team championship during Saturday's 65th annual Hartford Public Invitational indoor track and field meet at Wesleyan University.

    The Vikings finished with 44 points to edge Glastonbury, which finished second with 40. Norwich Free Academy wound up seventh with 24 points.

    Nixon won the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, 61/4 inches, breaking the old record of 33-10 set by Nonnewaug of Woodbury's Amanda Gland in 2006; Bennett captured the pole vault by clearing 10-91/4, breaking the old mark of 10-9 set a year ago by NFA's Jessica Sullivan; and Clement won the 600-meter race in 1 minute, 37.22 seconds, shattering her own record of 1:40.05 set during last year's meet.

    East Lyme's other points came from Bennett in the 55 hurdles (third, 9.12 seconds), Erika Marks in the 55 dash (fourth, 7.53) and the 4x400 relay team of Kendra Kohanski, Sara Schwartz, Gabri-ella Wuyke and Clement (fourth, 4:18.71).

    NFA's 4x800 relay team of Meegan Joly, Cassy Hunter, Jackie Sullivan and Kathleen O'Brien was victorious in 9:56.04 while Lauren LePage was fifth in the long jump (16-7) and sixth in the high jump (5-0), Miranda Wallace was sixth in the long jump (16-41/4), Amy Sinko was third in the 600 (1:42.23), Hunter was ffith in the mile (5:26.54) and Joly was fifth in the two-mile (11:47.30).

    In addition, Bacon Academy's Marcella Schroeder placed sixth in the 55 hurdles (9.38) and Fitch's 4x800 relay team of Annie Rowland, Mhari O'Donnell, Abby Singer and Katie Morrell placed sixth in 10:47.41.

    In other events:

    • Nora Brown won the 55 high hurdles (8.98), Danielle Sorano won the pole vault (8-6) and Hil-lary Maxson was second in both the 1,600 (5:37.05) and 3,200 (12:21.70) as Old Saybrook won the Shoreline Conference Invitational at the New Haven Athletic Center. Old Saybrook had 48 points.

    Also for Old Saybrook, Sara Schiavone finished fifth in the 55 high hurdles (9.63), Lara Novinski was sixth in the 300 (44.47), Lindsey Martel was sixth in the shot put (31-31/2), the 4x200 relay team of Maggi Dunlap, Deanna Slobin, Courtney MacNeil and Schiavone was third (1:57.24) and the 4x800 relay team finished fifth (10:39.96). For Montville, Sam Kaplan was fourth in the pole vault (7-6), Blair Church was fourth in the 600 (1:47.21), Church teamed with Bri Middel, Colby and Cailin McAdams to finish sixth in the 4x800 relay (10:53.67), Cassie Rice was fifth in the long jump (14-101/2) and Ashley Squandurra, Alicia Rainville, Colby McAdams and Ellen McNamara were third in the 4x400 relay (4:36.53).

    In addition, St. Bernard's Caroline Riley was third in the 1,600 (5:37.19) and Lauren Londregan was fifth in the 1,000 (3:21.96); Windham's Marissa Sanders was second in the 600 (1:45.90), third in the 300 (42.97) and teamed with Samantha Person, Cassandra Doughty and Melissa Griffin to take fifth in the 4x200 relay (1:57.76); Britney Miela was fifth in the shot put (32-3), Keila Garrido tied for fifth in the pole vault (7-0) and Person was sixth in the long jump (14-6).

    Also, Old Lyme's Laurel Camean, Alina Byrne, Tory McKnight and Emily Moran placed sixth in the 1,600 sprint medley (4:52.34) and Meghan Shettle, Byrne, McKnight and Moran were sixth in the 4x200 (1:58.62); and Lyman Memorial's Katherine Fitton was sixth in the 3,200 (12:41.82).

    Boys' indoor track

    • NFA was the top local school at the Hartford Public Invite, placing fifth with 26 points. Ledyard was seventh with 17, Plainfield tied for ninth (15) and Griswold was 11th (14.5). Manchester won the event with 50 points. Plainfield's Chad Nadeau was the only local winner, taking first in the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 101/2 inches).

    Mike Miner finished second in the 600 for NFA (1:24.73). Also for the Wildcats, Craig Babcock was third in the pole vault (13 feet), Miguel Colon was fourth in the long jump (20-53/4). Tashon Davis was fourth in the 55 hurdles (8.14) and Andrew Cardin placed fourth in the 3200 (9:47.90).

    For Ledyard, Sam Saccomano was second in the 55 hurdles (8.11), followed by teammate Tyler Edwardsen (8.14). Fred Hewett was sixth in the 55 dash (6.74) and the 4x400 relay team of Kevin Esposito, Andrew Esposito, Hewett and Matt Tunucci was fifth (3:34.86).

    In addition, Plainfield's Aaron Nadeau was fourth in the shot put (45-2) while teammate O'Shane Mitchell was sixth in the triple jump (40-2); Griswold's Jason Cusack finished second in the 1,600 (4:31.87), Sean May tied for third in the high jump (6-0) and Justin Blades tied for fifth (6-0); Woodstock Academy's Nelson Laskoski was fifth in the pole vault (13-0) and Trevor Ruff was sixth in the 600 (1:27.89); and Fitch's Cory Calamari placed sixth in the pole vault (13-0).

    • Ethan Salkiewicz of Tourtellotte won the high jump (6-0) and was fourth in the long jump (19-9 1/2) at the Shoreline Conference Invitational. Thomaston won the meet with 49 points while Old Saybrook was fifth (25) and Windham ninth (21).

    Windham's Alex Springer was the other local winner, capturing the long jump (20-7), and teamed with J.D. Sadlon, Jose Santiago and Spencer Beaudreault to finish sixth in the 4x200 relay (1:42.37). Also for the Whippets, Michael Cruz was second in the shot put (44-41/2) and Kyle Lambert was fifth in the pole vault (10-6).

    For Old Lyme, Will Ricker was second in the 1,000 (2:38.29) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:43.16) while Max Blackledge was second in the high jump; and for Old Saybrook, the 1,600 sprint medley team of Trevor Manuel, Nick Bai, Nick Kauffman and J.J. Connolly was fourth (3:59.30), Mike Rubano was fourth in the 1,000 (2:42.46) and fifth in the 1,600 (4:44.10), Rod Souza was second in the 55 high hurdles (8.15), Sean Charles was sixth in both the long jump (5-8) and 55 high hurdles (8.92) and Alex Strand was sixth in the 600 (1:30.96). Lyman Memorial's Evan Babinski was second in the 1,000 (2:38.29), Adam Oleksiak of Tourtellotte was sixth in the 1,000 (2:44.86) and Montville's Rayshawn Hewitt was fifth in the 55 high hurdles (8.38).
