Town honored by state for its commitment to preservation

The Town of Waterford was honored Wednesday and recognized by the state for its preservation partnership established between them and the Commission on Culture and Tourism and the National Park Service.

The town was given a framed certificate for its commitment to communitywide preservation and its ongoing efforts to recognize, preserve and celebrate its local architectural heritage.

The town established the Waterford Historic Properties Commission in 1999 and the following year qualified for designation as a Certified Local Government. The program promotes the preservation of historic resources. The partnership has provided the town with about $2,500 in grants and funds to participate in federal and state historic preservation programs, according to Bob Nye, the town clerk.

Nye said the Historic Properties Commission is working on a number of local projects and is creating a Web site.
