    Everett Westall

    Waterford - Everett J. Westall, 80, of 790 Vauxhall St. Ext., in Waterford, passed away Sunday Sept. 28, 2008, at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

    He was born on May 20, 1928, in Newport, R.I., and had been married to Betty Westall, his wife of 58 years, on March 17, 1950, in Baltimore.

    Mr. Westall retired from the U.S. Coast Guard on Dec. 1, 1967, as a Chief Engineman after 20 years of service.

    He then began a second career at Pfizer from 1968 until his retirement in 1989. While in the Coast Guard, he passed the gateway to the top of the world by crossing the Artic Circle aboard the USCG Cutter Westwind on July 4, 1961. He had also crossed the equator on Oct. 27, 1966, aboard the USCG Cutter Rockaway.

    He enjoyed working in his yard, watching one of his movies from his extensive collection, and playing with his Bassett hounds, Buttercup and Amber.

    Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Nancy Robbins and her husband, Donald of Waterford, Deborah Valdizan of Waterford; two sons, Donald Westall of Rocky Hill, James Westall and his wife, Joanne of Uncasville; a sister, Anita Dennis of Baton Rouge, La.; one granddaughter, Lisa Horn and her husband, Christopher of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a great-granddaughter, Julia.

    Funeral service and burial in the Jordan Cemetery, Waterford will be private. There are to be no visiting hours.

    Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London is in charge of arrangements.
