    Rams avenge field hockey loss; qualify for state tournament

    Old Saybrook - Meredith Chamberlain had two goals and two assists as the Old Saybrook High School field hockey team beat Morgan of Clinton 6-0 Friday, avenging a 3-2 loss earlier this season, snapping a five-game winless streak and qualifying the Rams for the state tournament for the first time since 2003.

    ”It's their first time,” Old Saybrook coach Kara Bell said of her players reaching the state tournament. “They're very excited and they earned it.”

    Ariana Pappas also had two goals for the Rams (6-4-1) and Leah Sweet and Nikki Mehrtens scored one goal each.

    In other games:

    ¦ Kelly Grills and Jackie Albert scored for Stonington in a 2-1 win over East Lyme in the Eastern Connecticut Conference. Amanda Barbeau scored for East Lyme (1-8-1, 1-5-1). Stonington is 8-2, 6-2.

    The ECC will be participating in a Play for the Cure event where donations will be collected for breast cancer research at the following games: Waterford at Stonington (Monday), Killingly at NFA (Monday) and East Lyme at Windham (Tuesday). Waterford held its Play for the Cure event Friday, raising more than $400.

    ¦ Killingly remained unbeaten and in first place in the ECC with a 1-0 victory over Waterford. Kelly Allan scored for Killingly (9-0-1, 7-0) mid-way through the first half, keeping the Redgals two games ahead of Stonington with three remaining in league play. Christine Nykyforchyn made eight saves in goal for Waterford (4-4, 3-3).

    ¦ Katie McMorrow scored for Windham in a 1-0 win over Norwich Free Academy in the ECC. NFA is 2-5-1, 2-4-1.

    H.S. volleyball

    ¦ Nina Wojtkiewicz had 26 assists and Griswold blanked Woodstock Academy 25-14, 25-16 and 25-20. Cailin Sorder added 12 kills and seven digs, Kelsey Wilcox 10 digs and one ace and Katherine Pearce 12 kills, three aces, five digs and a block for Griswold (11-1).

    ¦ Kastine Evans had 16 assists and 13 kills for NFA in a 25-20, 24-26, 25-11, 25-21 win over Bacon Academy. Jen Escobido had 16 service points and 11 assists for NFA (7-5). Stephanie Armagno had 25 assists for Bacon (6-5) and Brooke Bailey added 14 kills and eight digs.

    ¦ Evangeline Mullins had six kills and two blocks for Norwich Tech in a 25-15, 25-18, 25-19 win over Wheeler. Ali Salva added three digs and two aces for Norwich Tech (5-7). Wheeler is 0-11.

    ¦ Katie Freaney had 15 digs and 12 assists for Old Lyme in a 25-22, 14-25, 25-14, 25-19 loss to Haddam-Killingworth in Shoreline Conference play. Meghan Shettle had 12 digs and five kills for Old Lyme (8-5) and Colbey Kennedy had nine kills and five digs.

    ¦ Maggie Higgins had 27 digs and 10 kills for Ledyard in a 21-25, 25-23, 27-25, 26-28, 15-11 loss to Windham. Shelby Dalton had 26 digs and 10 kills for the Colonels (6-8) and Shayna Diggs had 14 kills and 12 digs.

    ¦ Ashley Boucher had 30 assists and nine aces as Lyman Memorial defeated Windham Tech 25-12, 23-25, 25-8, 25-18. Christine Wengloski added 15 kills and seven aces, Kena Perry nine kills and 15 digs and Meaghan Coyle 18 digs for Lyman (7-7).

    H.S. swimming

    ¦ East Lyme won seven events in a 109-72 victory over Ledyard in the ECC. Noelene Power, Michele Lalonde, Karen Chen, and Brianne Munch won the 200 medley relay. Julie Lalonde (200 free), Liz Miller (200 IM), Karen Hayes (diving), Dana Tricarico (100 fly), Steph Lawton (100 free), and Emily Newton (100 back) also won for East Lyme (7-3, 6-1). Elyse Phillips won the 50 free and was on the winning 200 free and 4x100 relay teams for Ledyard (4-3, 4-3).

    ¦ Hannah Schenk (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), Rachel Kriet (200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Abby Gatheral (200 individual medley, 100 butterfly) won two individual events each to lift Waterford past Windham 102-68 in the ECC. The three also contributed to a victory in the 200 medley relay, joining Meika Freeman. Waterford is 2-3, 2-3.

    Women's soccer

    ¦ Brittany Tegeler scored twice, including the game-winner in the 52nd minute, and UConn defeated Pittsburgh 2-1. UConn is 4-7-3, 2-2-2 in the Big East.

    Men's basketball

    ¦ Coast Guard Academy senior forward Craig Johnson has been named a preseason honorable mention All-America by The Sporting News for the second straight season. Johnson led the Bears, who reached the NCAA Division III Elite 8 last season, with 14.4 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.
