Daddy Yankee comes to Mohegan Sun
There’s one measure of a person’s lifetime achievements, in my opinion, that doesn’t get enough attention. To wit: How many words did the person make up that became accepted in everyday language?
For example, long after I’m gone, there will be a group at happy hour or a party, and someone will admiringly and wistfully say, “Hey, remember Rick Koster? Didn’t he invent the word ‘ludicrosity’?”
And someone else will say, “Why, yes! Good word, that.”
And it IS a good word – just not as good as “reggaetón,” which was invented by the Puerto Rican rapper/producer/songwriter Daddy Yankee. The word describes a festive style of music that fuses hip hop with various Caribbean flavors – and Daddy Yankee is known as the King of Reggaetón. Tunes of his like “Gasolina,” “Dura,” “Con Calma” and dozens more define the genre.
Daddy Yankee could rest easy on these accomplishments – and in fact he will. But not until completing a “La Ultima Vuelta” farewell tour that hits the Mohegan Sun Friday.
Daddy Yankee, 8 p.m. Friday, Mohegan Sun Arena; $61-$151; www.mohegansun.com.
