    Sublime bird calls

Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds (submitted)

Given the preponderance of bands named after fowl, any musical artist hoping to do so this late in the game had best come up with something clever and memorable. This was the problem faced by vocalist Arleigh Kincheloe and her brother, harmonica ace Jackson Kincheloe, when they wanted to start a jammy soul/rock band. They were sitting in a bar, pondering ornithologically.

Jackson: “How about the Eagles? Or the Yardbirds?”

Arleigh: “Taken. Swans? The Black Crowes – and throw in an “e” to emphasize uniqueness!”

Jackson: “Already done. Hey! How about the Jayhawks? Hawkwind? Atomic Rooster?”

Alreigh: “What the hell is an Atomic Rooster?”

Jackson: “You know: the group Carl Palmer was in before ELP?”

Arleigh: “I thought he was in Asia.”

Jackson: “That was later. But I think—”

At this point, the bartender interjected, serving the frustrated siblings liberal shots of Crown Royal: “Have you thought of Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds?”

And that’s how it happened. On Saturday in the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den, Sister Sparrow & the Dirty Birds entertain in a big way. Do yourself a favor and call out a request for their superb tune “Ghost.”
