    The essence of Scottish folk

Scottish contemporary folk band Breabach (submitted)

Folk music varies significantly depending on which country’s folk music you’re talking about. For example, the folk music you’ll hear in Appalachia is considerably different than what you’d hear in China or Scotland.

Breabach, based in Glasgow but accomplished at all the nuances of indigenous music from the highlands to the sea-and-wind-smashed outer islands, is very much a proud Scottish folk act. Their excitement about tradition — and their collective willingness to push and go beyond established parameters — means albums such as 2022’s “Fás” (Gaelic for growth/sprouting) are as surprisingly contemporary as they are comfortably familiar.

See Breabach tonight in Old Saybrook at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. If you do, I’d be surprised if you don’t purchase a set of bagpipes and/or Uilleann pipes in the next week.

Breabach, 7 p.m. Thursday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $35; www.thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
