    Big red machine

It’s hard to upstage the world-revered classical pianist Artem Belogurov.

    Artem Belogurov

But Saturday in the latest Music Matters concert at La Grua Center in Stonington, the artist in question has to go up against the very instrument he’ll be playing.

It seems La Grua, through the efforts of Music Matters artistic director Christopher Greenleaf, is bringing in “the Red Cristofani,” a modern replica of Bartolemeo Cristofari’s three surviving Baroque pianos, for “The Very First Piano,” a period-appropriate recital.

And yes, the replication is of the first piano ever made.

On this magnificent instrument, Belogurov will perform works by the likes of J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel, Domenico Scarlatti, Lodovico Giustini and more.

To answer your next questions: The piano is in fact a vibrant red — and you can marvel at the construction of the keyboard in the photo above. And don’t worry. Belogurov is the perfect artist to play Big Red — as we at The Day have taken the liberty of christening it.

The last bit of good news is that, while Big Red’s permanent home will be at at First Lutheran Church in Back Bay, Boston — easy access for visiting global musicians — the piano will travel to La Grua on a regular basis.

The Very First Piano” with Big Red and Artem Belogurov, Music Matters, 5 p.m. Saturday, La Grua Center, 32 Water St., Stonington; $22.85; www.lagruacenter.org, (860) 535-2300.
