Bringing La Grammy to La Grua
We planned it this way.
On Sunday, Connecticut native (Waterbury/West Haven) Nicole Zuraitis, a superb vocalist/pianist, won a Grammy in the Best Vocal Jazz Album category for her “How Love Begins” recording.
So: where’s her first post-Grammy-triumph gig? Why, Friday in Stonington’s La Grua Center as part of their More Music series.
Zuraitis has a powerful and assured delivery, but overall the seductive quality of her voice suggests butter melting on a cinnamon roll. Zuraitis wrote or co-wrote all the material on “How Love Begins” and co-produced it with the immortal Christian McBride. The tunes are sophisticated and adventurous, with flights of instrumental fancy adding flourish to hugely melodic observations about Romance with a capital “R.”
A Grammy winning, homegrown (and richly deserving) talent is coming to our doorstep. Be there.
Nicole Zuraitis, 6 p.m. Friday, La Grua Center, 32 Water St., Stonington; $20 advance, $25 door; lagrua.org. (860) 535-2300.
