Fine tunes after a long nap

    The Van Pelt (contributed)

Last year, members of NYC/New Jersey indie rock band the Van Pelt woke up, yawned and rubbed their crusty eyes, and said, “Whoa! We’ve been asleep for 25 years! Thank goodness it’s never too late to write and make new indie rock music!”

    And by God they did!

They released a fine album of fresh material called “Artisans & Merchants,” and it’s better than any indie rock record made after a 25 year break has any right to be.

Recommended tracks are the sleepy anthem “Image of Health,” “Grid,” “Punk House” and “Cold Coconuts,” the latter of which has a spoken word delivery, cheesecloth psychedelics and silly but irresistible guitar punctuations.

See the Van Pelt Saturday in New London’s Telegraph Autonomous Zone and beg them not to go back to sleep. Bonus fun: Caithlin De Marrais of Rainer Maria is also on the bill.

The Van Pelt, 7 p.m. Saturday, Telegraph Autonomous Zone, 137 Bank St., New London; $10; telegraphnl.com.
