    ’Mmm Mmm Mmm’? Mm-hmm!

    Crash Test Dummies (submitted)

As an old friend of the band, I happened to be in the rehearsal room when Crash Test Dummies wrote their biggest hit. The song came together quickly – with that spark of spontaneity and magic that happens now and again.

In fact, the only difficult part of the experience was coming up with the name of the song!

“How about ‘Trilogy: Three Elementary School Kids, Each Having a Tough Time’?” I suggested.

“That’s stupid,” said Brad Roberts, who wrote the tune for the Canadian rock group.

    “But … that’s what the song’s about,” I protested.

“We’re calling it ‘Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm’ and that’s final,” Roberts said.

“Then we’re not friends anymore,” I pouted. And that’s the last time we saw each other.

But I’m thinking about attending the Crash Test Dummies show Tuesday in Old Saybrook at The Kate. Let bygones be bygones. Life’s too short. Besides, it’d be good to hear “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” again.

Not only that, but let’s not forget: CTD have a LOT of good songs including “Superman’s Song,” “God Dragged His Feet,” “At My Funeral” and an intriguing arrangement of XTC’s “Peter Pumpkinhead.” And I almost made it all the way through this without mentioning Robert’s extremely distinctive baritone voice.

Crash Test Dummies, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $50; thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
