Motor Jam 2018 brings classic vehicles, Erik Estrada to Speedbowl Sunday

The '60s and '70s were perhaps THE great era for being a kid and drooling over which vehicle from popular culture would be the most fun to own. As a society, we were far enough along that, in terms of production, real-world technology was catching up with sci-fi fantasies. Plus, we weren't spoiled by the special effects overdose of today's movies and video games, where nothing is left to the imagination.

It should be pretty fun, then, on Sunday when Motor Jam 2018 hits the New London-Wateford Speedbowl. On site will be the 1969 "General Lee" Dodge Charger from "The Dukes of Hazzard"; the titular haunted maniac-sedan from the film version of Stephen King's "Christine"; the 1976 Ford Gran Torino from "Starsky & Hutch"; the 1966 Batmobile from the original Adam West TV show; and physical representations of the "Scooby Doo" Mystery Machine and "The Flintstones" boulder-mobile.

The only iconic modes of transportation missing? A "Jetsons" space-car and the shipwrecked "Gilligan" boat. But that's OK: "CHiPs" star Erik Esrada will be part of the festivities with his motorcycles — along with dozens of other antique cars, monster trucks, custom motorbikes, and food/beverage vendors. And part of the proceeds help out the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

    Motor Jam 2018, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, New London-Waterford Speedbowl, 1080 Hartford Turnpike/Route 85, Waterford; $15 adults, $10 kids, free under 36-inches tall; (860) 243-1115.
