    East Lyme Touch-a-Truck is Saturday

Good things come to those who wait.

The 11th annual East Lyme Touch-a-Truck, an event that has delighted countless numbers of children over the years, had to be postponed from its scheduled May date because of inclement weather and was moved to Oct. 13.

Now that day is here. Youngsters can flock to McCook Point Park on Saturday to see, touch and climb into a wide variety of vehicles.

The event, which is co-sponsored by the East Lyme Auxiliary of Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut and the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Department, will boast an array of fire trucks, including a pumper from the Niantic Fire Department; a ladder truck from the Flanders Fire Department; and a 1930s fire truck provided by Norman Peck. An ambulance from the Niantic Fire Department will be there, too, and kids can get inside the ambulance and lie on a stretcher.

That’s just a sampling. In addition to the myriad vehicles, there are crafts, face-painting and balloon animals for the young’uns. They can also get a ride around the park on the Roaming Railroad (there is an additional charge for that).

Of particular note: Touch-a-Truck will feature a horn-free hour from 9 to 10 a.m., aimed at younger kids and noise-sensitive children.

Proceeds from this Touch-a-Truck benefit the work of Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut, which helps over 17,000 children and their families each year in the region.

East Lyme Touch-a-Truck, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, McCook Point Park, Niantic; requested donation $4 per person, free for kids under 2; (860) 443-2896, ext. 1406; childandfamilyagency.org.
