Pianist Olga Vinokur kicks of Music Matters season with virtual performance Saturday

Russian-American pianist Olga Vinokur returns as Stonington's La Grua Center debuts its 2020-21 Music Matters season with "Medtner, Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninoff" at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Let's be clear. This is a taped visual and audio recording of Vinokur performing on-site last week at the La Grua on the facility's 1886 Chickering concert grand piano. Owing to COVID concerns, there are at present no live events scheduled. The concert will be streamed virtually on the La Grua YouTube channel.

It's a sumptuous program: Three of Tchaikovsky's Seasons (Op. 37a April, May & August) along with Rachmaninoff's Etude-Tableau No, 7 in g, Op. 33 and the Three Moments Musicaux, Op. 16 and an edit from Nikolai Medtner's Forgotten Melodies. In dramatic conclusion, Vinokur was joined by her son, Dan Gnip, in a set of four-hands selections from Anyuta, Valery Gavrilin's ballet homage to Chekhov.

To kick off the event, Vinokur appears in a pre-concert Zoom Q&A with audience members. Tickets are $10 for the online event; upon registration, attendees will receive two links, one for the Vinokur chat and one for the concert itself. To pre-register, go to lagruacenter.org.
