Local sites are part of Connecticut Historic Gardens day

Gardens surround the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme.

Sunday marks the ninth annual Historic Garden Day in Connecticut, and 14 sites throughout the state - including a few in southeastern Connecticut - are opening their gates and providing special events for the public.

At the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, visitors can see the gardens and landscape that inspired so many artists. They can paint, too, and listen to storyteller Tom Lee at 2 p.m.

The Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford hosts garden tours and talks about the history and design of the Harkness gardens.

Connecticut master gardeners will provide tours of New London's Shaw Mansion garden and answer questions. A local croquet club will play a match, and Miss Perkins and some of her 1860s friends give a guided tour about "The Language of Flowers."
