Herman Leonard's 'Jazz Memories' on display at Lyman Allyn

If I were to be appointed to run a class called “How to Look Cool,” the first thing I’d do would be to not hire me to teach it. Beyond that, I’d organize field trips to New London’s Lyman Allyn Art Museum so pupils could absorb the greatness of “Herman Leonard: Jazz Memories,” a series of photographs of jazz icons from the golden age (see Dizzy Gillespie, here). Jazz, as an art form, is certainly focused on the music — but there’s also a connective aura of attitude and persona that goes with it. Leonard’s amazing images capture, in revealing and emotive fashion, a larger-than-life Who’s Who of jazz icons. Through May 29. The Lyman Allyn is at 625 Williams St., New London. Hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tues.-Sat., 1-5 p.m. Sun.; (860) 443-2545.
