Mystic Seaport holds annual Chantey Blast Saturday

If you have a penchant for singing and a love for maritime history, consider this: the Mystic Seaport will be throwing its annual Chantey Blast this weekend — an event that gathers hundreds in the main hall of the German Club to sing chanteys, maritime ballads and sailor songs en masse with the seaport’s own chantey performers.

Considering the wildly harsh winter weather we’ve been having as of late, the event looks like a perfect way to break back into the local community after being cooped up in a house for weeks. And for those shy with singing, it also looks as if, from coverage we’ve done in the past, actual participation isn’t necessarily a requirement to be at the event. You could just sit on the floor and knit socks if you wanted. Being a part of the merry crowd seems to be what's most important here.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome at this fundraising event. The Chantey Blast and Pub Sing is co-sponsored by the Pinewoods Folk Music Club and is organized as part of the Friends of the Festival program that aims to raise support for the seaport's Sea Music Festival, which happens June 7-10 this year.

Chantey Blast and Pub Sing, 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Frohsinn Hall, 54 Greenmanville Ave., Mystic; free, but donations are accepted; (860) 572-5365.
