The Slater Memorial Museum is holding the 75th annual Connecticut Artists Juried Exhibition through March 16 in its Converse Art Gallery. 

This year’s juror is Douglas Hyland, director emeritus of the New Britain Museum of American Art (NBMAA). His previous directorships were at the San Antonio (Texas) Museum of Art, the Birmingham (Alabama) Museum of Art and the Memphis (Tennessee) Brooks Museum of Art.  

Nearly $2,000 is being awarded from the exhibition and through a grant from the Katherine Forest Crafts Foundation for two awards for excellence in fine crafts. The winners are: first place: "Salt Marsh Radiant Pink" by Helen Cantrell, Old Lyme; second place: "Absolutely Free" by Peter Seltzer, Woodbury; third place: "Untitled Prime (White Light)" by Cynthia Cooper, Farmington; and three honorable mentions: "Morro Bay Inspiration" by Roberta Morehouse, Simsbury; "Sagger Fired Bottle" by Les Olin, Mystic; "Primal Instincts" by Hilary Opperman, New Haven; and this year, two Katherine Forest Craft Foundation Prizes for Excellence in Fine Craft are awarded to Randell Nelson of Willington for "Who Would Kill a Hummingbird?" and Cameron Johnson of Mystic for "Symboiosis."

The Connecticut Artists Juried Exhibition was started during World War II by the now-defunct Norwich Art Association and was initially a strictly local event. Over time, the museum assumed greater responsibility and made it the state-wide event it is today. The exhibition is the longest-running juried exhibition of varied forms and media based in a museum in the state.
