Coast Guard Band's Jazz Nonet undertakes 'Birth of the Cool' Sunday

At 2 p.m. Sunday, the United States Coast Guard Band's Jazz Nonet will present a virtual Livestream broadcast from Leamy Hall as they perform the entire groundbreaking and historic "Birth of the Cool" album by Miles Davis.

The 1957 release changed the course of jazz with its segue from bebop to what came to be called "cool jazz." With classical underpinnings, subtle interplay, instrumental polyphony and sheer strength of composition, "Birth of the Cool" was/is a radical, demanding and eternally intoxicating effort.

The group will also announce its official new name, chosen during online balloting, during the concert. The broadcast is free and simulcast via the Coast Guard Band's YouTube channel; (860) 701-6826.
