      Stonington Free Library invites community members to visit during library hours and view a variety of flowering amaryllis bulbs that the Stonington Garden Club will arrange for display. Visitors are encouraged to stop in throughout the week of December 5 – 9 and see the progress of these showy blooms.

      Experience the peaceful wonder of a walk in the woods lit by the soft glow of more than 500 luminaria, then warm up by a festive fire with a hot apple cider or or hot chocolate at our trailside Winter Cafe.

      Snacks and adult holiday libations (including spiked peppermint hot chocolate and hot cider with spiced rum) sold separately.

      Luminaria welcomes both children and adults to celebrate the season.Gather with family or friends and start a new holiday tradition, bring your office for a holiday outing or book a delightful winter date night to enjoy the season.

      Groups are welcome, we encourage a representative to book group tickets together to ensure space in your desired time slot is available.

      Each of the three evenings includes a featured guest. Ticket price includes hot cider and hot cocoa at our Winter Cafe; adult holiday libation tickets sold separately.

      Featured guests: DPNC Animal Ambassadors

      Some of our resident DPNC animals will join the festivities at the trailside Winter Cafe at Friday evening’s event. Meet our owls and other animals of the forest and learn interesting animal facts while enjoying your post-stroll hot beverages.

      SATURDAY, DEC 10

      Featured guest: Woodland Santa

      Before or after your walk in the woods, your little ones are invited to a magical holiday experience full of wonder: a visit with Woodland Santa! Meet Woodland Santa and his elf inside by the fireplace while you capture a holiday photo.

      Note: Woodland Santa is available for visitors to the Saturday 5, 5:30 & 6 pm time slots only, then he heads back to his workshop! Nature Center luminaria, Winter Cafe and outdoor fire are open for all time slots.

      Featured guests: Holiday choral singers

      After your walk through the glowing luminaria in our winter forest, settle into our trailside Winter Cafe as the fire roars and the sounds of holiday carols from our featured singers fill the air.

      Advance ticket purchase is required and space is capped per time slot.
      Members: $13.60, Non-members: $16
      Choose from six timed entry slots each night.

      Come and explore the core teachings and practices of Buddhism, as a philosophy of life and deep spiritual practice, that blends classic Buddhism with Shin Buddhist teachings, with one of Connecticut’s most well-known Buddhist teachers, Rev. Daishin Senpai, M.A. Our Online Practice & Talk meetings are enriching occasions to personally engage the Dharma (Buddhism) in a an innovative, gentle, and meaningful way. Our in-person meetings at Wesleyan University include meditation, sacred chants, incense offering, and so much more. Open to the general public, beginners, and veteran practitioners alike.

      This week, we will be exploring the Rev. (Dr.) Taitetsu Unno’s modern classic, “River of Fire, River of Water”. Visit our Meetup or Facebook groups to learn about the chapter to be discussed; the chapter will be named in the title of the event’s announcement. Also, you can click on our Connect tab, to sign-up for our newsletter. Remember, you don’t need to read anything to attend and enjoy the meeting.

      Meeting Rules: Practice kind speech, be courteous, and abstain from talking about current politics or display or wear political or offensive symbols or imagery. For in-person attendees, please turn off your cell phones.

      Suggested Donation: $10 -$15 to help cover costs for extensive outreach efforts, our Zoom meetings, internet services, and standard operating costs. Thank you in advance for your generous support.

      The Friends of Fort Griswold cordially invite you to a festive gathering around a glowing bonfire on the grounds of Fort Griswold Battlefield, Saturday, December 10, from 11:00AM – 2:30PM. Join with neighbors and other fort enthusiasts to share a warm beverage, some tasty sweets, and roast some marshmallows over the fire. Try your hand at an old fashioned game or two and climb the 166 steps to the top of the monument for an amazing view. Do some last minute holiday shopping of great books, patches, and other Revolutionary War memorabilia.

      Our special guest, Saxophone Santa, arrives at 12:30 pm.

      Our docents will take you on guided tours of the fort at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Travel back to 1781 as they retell the fascinating history of the Revolutionary War battle that took place at Fort Griswold.

      In the event of rain, we will move the festivities inside the Monument House Museum.

      Join the Friends of the Preston Public Library and the Preston Historical Society as they host Kandie Carle, the Victorian Lady on Sun., Dec. 11 at 2 pm at the Preston Public Library. While dressed in actual vintage and authentically reproduced undergarments, clothing and accessories, Kandie will add humor history and anecdotes about fashion, home life and etiquette of men and women during the 1890 holiday season.
      Bring your own teacup and saucer, or use ours. Tea and refreshments will be served after the program.

      The Anglican Singers will present a service of Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas on Sunday, December 11, at 5 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 76 Federal Street, New London. The group, under the direction of Simon Holt and accompanied by organist William Cooper, will sing works by Cleobury, Ord, Archer, Darke, Goldschmidt, Carter, Villette, Tavener, Cornelius, and Willcocks. All are welcome to join in this festive seasonal tradition.
