Tell Me Something: Kat Murphy returns to art

For artist Kat Murphy, having a 4-year-old daughter brings new meaning to the phrase "learning something new every day." Getting back into her studio this year on Golden Street in New London, Murphy uses multiple painting mediums, collage and line drawing to create color-rich surfaces. Murphy, along with other city artists and vendors, will be participating in Small Biz Saturday on Nov. 30 in New London. Murphy's work will be available on at 94 Golden St. from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Her current work is also on display at Diane Birdsall Gallery in Old Lyme, Hygienic Art in New London, the Mystic Arts Center, The Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme, Amazon or visit the studio by appointment, via katmurphy.com.

Say you have a modern-day high school locker. Whose picture would be hanging in it?

    My husband, he's hot!

    What's your favorite sandwich?

    Grilled cheese.

What's your favorite Rolling Stones song?

    "Gimme Shelter"

You're locked in a museum for a night, which one would it be?

I have to say the Louvre. The line was too long when I was there during a whirlwind trip and I missed it. Oops! You would need at least a night anyway.

Sorry to have to tell you this, but an asteroid is going to wipe out all humanity next week. So, what's your last meal?

    French fries.

What is your all time favorite event at the Hygienic?

I always love an art show but I'll say the 2013 I AM Fest. I am a fan!

Name an item you can't live without:

    Glue.

Item you should live without and keep meaning to get rid of:

    Cardboard.

    Who is your favorite comedian?

Favorite is a strong word; I'd have to say Russell Brand is pretty creative right now.

Last book you couldn't put down:

    "Just Kids" by Patti Smith

    You're a DJ at a club. What's the night's last song?

    "Get Lucky" by Daft Punk.

What language do you wish you could instantly speak?

    French

What do you sing in the shower?

Not in the shower, but the last few years I often find myself humming a Christmas song. Ironically I cannot recall it right now.

You have a time machine and drinks with an artist. Who's coming and what are you drinking?

Andy Warhol, I'll have what he's having.

What's a word you can never spell correctly on the first try?

Well, looks like I spelled aluminum right, so next is definitely, necessary, tomorrow...

Which book, television show, movie or theatrical production most accurately depicts life working as an artist?

    "Pollack".

Which is better: Saturday night or Sunday morning?

Saturday night. Sunday mornings can go either way with a 4 year old and they are always much too early.

    Oils or Acrylics?

Beeswax, which mixes well with oils, but I love to mix it up and work with acrylics too.

    Sorbet or ice cream?

    Ice cream.

    Manet or Monet?

Manet certainly was persistent, but I'll go with Monet for color.

Pick a number between 2 and 19. Why that number?

    Three, it's the magic number.

What historical event would you like to have been witness to?

I am drawing a blank here … not sure i can pick an event, more like an era, like New York in the 50's.

What is your favorite place in Connecticut to recharge and/or find serenity?

Usually the beach, but these days my studio.

Whom alive today do you most admire?

    My 4-year old, Greta.
