    Stonington, East Lyme girls win holiday tournament openers

    Westerly — Aliza Bell had 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Stonington girls' basketball team advanced to the final of the Westerly Community Credit Union holiday tournament with a 47-44 victory over host Westerly on Tuesday.

    The Bears (3-1) will play South Kingstown (R.I.), a 58-48 winner over Chariho (R.I.) in Tuesday's second game, in Thursday's championship game at 8 p.m.

    Miranda Arruda added 11 points for Stonington while Kate Hall had eight points and six steals. The Bears overcame a slow start. They trailed the Bulldogs 7-4 after one quarter before outscoring Westerly 20-13 in the second quarter to take a 24-20 halftime lead.

    East Lyme also won its holiday tournament opener, defeating East Hartford 58-25 at the Shelton tournament behind Megan Baumann's game-high 22 points. The Vikings (4-2) will play host Shelton, a 41-30 winner over Bunnell in Tuesday night's late game, on Thursday at 7 p.m.
