Friday's Games

Killingly at Stonington, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Killingly (3-1, 1-0 ECC Div. II); Stonington (0-4, 0-1)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: Twelve teams have one or no losses in Class M, meaning that the defending champion Redmen, ranked No. 7 (the top eight qualify) must keep on winning. They get the Bears, who have scored but 35 points in four games. Interesting to note, though, that Stonington's defense has allowed only 66, one of the league-best averages of 16.5 points per game.

Hillhouse at New London, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Hillhouse (0-5); New London (3-1)

Last week: Hillhouse lost to North Haven 49-14; New London was idle

Outlook: This is a rematch of a recent state championship game that resulted in a bitter loss for the Whalers. Hillhouse is winless, but a member of the competitive Southern Connecticut Conference, already having played quality opponents Hand, Brookfield and North Haven. The Whalers, who had a week to rest after a 13-8 win over Fitch, need to be ready.

Lyman Hall at Ledyard, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Lyman Hall (2-2); Ledyard (2-2)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: Both teams are 2-2, but with a common opponent: Montville. Lyman Hall trampled Montville 41-0 earlier this season, while Ledyard needed overtime to beat the Indians by a point. Lyman Hall is big and strong on its offensive line, giving Ledyard's defense quite the challenge. A win here moves the Colonels over .500, which hasn't happened this late in the season since now assistant principal/athletic director Jim Buonocore last took them to the playoffs.

Weston at East Lyme, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Weston (3-1); East Lyme (1-3)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: This could be one of the weekend's best games. The teams share an opponent — Pomperaug — and the results indicate this should be a very competitive game. Pomperaug defeated Weston by two and East Lyme by one (in overtime). Weston is tied for first in the Patriot Division of the South-West Conference, outscoring opponents 123-31 this season. The Vikings, meanwhile, have scored 131 points, second-best in the ECC behind Killingly.

Wilbur Cross at Fitch, 6:30 p.m.

Records: Wilbur Cross (2-2); Fitch (2-2)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: Two ornery teams here. Wilbur Cross lost two straight before its bye week to Xavier (by one point) and Amity. Fitch also had a week to ponder its loss to New London, after which coach Mike Ellis said his team's passing game needed to improve. If the Falcons have any hope of returning to the Class L playoffs, they must win here.

Saturday's Games

Newtown at NFA, 1 p.m.

Records: Newtown (4-0); NFA (3-1)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: There may be college teams who haven't played a schedule as tough as NFA's to date. Up next: No. 6 Newtown of the South-West Conference that has yielded a total of 14 points in four games thus far. NFA, however, has already seen Xavier, Fairfield Prep and East Lyme, meaning this has the potential to be one of the state's best games of the weekend.

Waterford at Bacon Academy, 2 p.m.

Records: Waterford (2-2, 1-0 ECC Div. II); Bacon (0-4, 0-1)

Last week: Both teams were idle

Outlook: The Lancers, winless last year, not only can eclipse .500, but can keep pace with Killingly atop ECC Div. II with a victory. Waterford won a road game late at Griswold nearly two weeks ago and gets a team here that has scored 14 points all season.
