Huge week ahead for teams ranked The Day's Top 10 coaches' poll

As astonishing as it may seem, it’s Week 9 of the high school football season.

It also looks like the best non-Thanksgiving week of the year, too.

Five of the 11 teams ranked in the top 10 of The Day's state coaches’ poll (yes, 11) are involved in some of the biggest and best games this weekend, headlined by No. 10 Berlin at No. 9 Bloomfield on Friday night.

Berlin and Bloomfield are both 7-0. Berlin moved into a 10th-place tie with North Haven (6-1) this week after East Hartford, formerly ranked seventh, lost at home last Friday to No. 8 Southington, 42-27.

Other top games this week (all on Friday night) are No. 4 St. Joseph (6-1) at No. 17 Staples (7-1), No. 6 Newtown (7-0) at No. 18 Brookfield (6-1), No. 7 Ansonia (7-0) at Woodland (7-0), No. 12 East Hartford (6-1) at No. 15 New Britain (6-1), and No. 14 Naugatuck (7-0) at Seymour (6-1).

No Eastern Connecticut Conference teams received votes for the fourth straight week. Griswold’s 28-8 loss at Sheehan last Friday dropped the ECC’s record to 3-16 in state interleague games this season.
