    H.S. roundup: Montville opens softball season with a win over Griswold

    Montville — Rori Curran's two-run triple highlighted a four-run third inning, leading Montville to a 6-4 win over Griswold on the opening day of the high school softball season on Saturday.

    Curran also had a double and scored two runs while Jillian Murallo had two hits and an RBI and Abby Diamantini had a triple for the Indians.

    Winning pitcher Alexis Michon struck out six and allowed three earned runs against the Wolverines, the defending Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament champion and Class M runner-up last season.

    In other games:

    • Sophomore Caylee Parker pitched a complete game, allowing only one earned run and five hits while striking out six, and went 2-for-2 at the plate in New London's 9-8 win over Morgan. Sophomore Finella Smith had two triples and three RBI while sophomore Alexia Liriano had a double and freshman Cassander Roman added an RBI single for the Whalers (1-0).

    • Anna Donahue belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Rachel Miller pitched a shutout in Waterford's 2-0 win over Ellington. Miller allowed just three hits while striking out 14 and walking two while Milly Walker and Ciana Chiappone each had a single.

    • Winning pitcher Sara Rivers struck out 12 and allowed four hits and went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, leading Ledyard past Norwich Tech, 16-1. Amanda Cox had two hits and six RBI while Samantha Money had a home run and three RBI and Aaliyah Amidon had a single and triple for the Colonels. Hannah Smith had a single and double for the Warriors.

    • Middletown's Arianna Albert's three-run triple highlighted a seven-run sixth inning in a 9-4 victory over East Lyme. Nikki Marsh and Anna Bonelli each had a single and double for East Lyme.

    • Sara Cote went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI in Norwich Free Academy's 14-1 rout of Westhill. Alicia Abde had a single, double and two RBI and Hailee Schrader had a single, two RBI and scored three runs while Bailey Comeau and Sophia DeCocco combined on a two-hitter.

    Baseball

    • Tait Sawden pitched six innings to earn the win and had a single, double and RBI, lifting Old Lyme past Fitch, 4-2. The Wildcats scored four runs in the third inning to take the lead. Liam Holloway picked up the save with a scoreless seventh, getting a game-ending double play with the bases loaded. Liam Flanagan had a two-out RBI single. Cam McGugan had two hits for the Falcons. 

    • Ledyard used an eight-run first inning on the way to a 12-0 shutout of Norwich Tech in a non-conference game that lasted four and a half innings. James Laconico went 3 for 3 with two RBI while Weston Bruce had two hits and two RBI and Elijah Morton added a double and three RBI for the Colonels. Cade Walters, Ken Turner and Matthew Thorton combined for the shutout. David Wyatt's double was one of four hits for the Warriors. 

    • Sam Godshind's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning propelled Hand past Waterford, 2-1. The Lancers took a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run. Cadin Maynard doubled and Sonny Pezzello singled for Waterford's only hits while Connor Podeszwa took the loss.

    • Brenton Trask earned the win in relief and Riley Burke had two hits and an RBI to lead NFA past Tolland, 6-4. Vinny Gualtieri and Daniel Blair both doubled and had an RBI for the Wildcats.

    Boys' tennis

    • Montville swept all the three doubles matches in straight sets in a 5-2 win over New London. The victorious duos were Jae Seung Kim and Cheuk Hei Chan, Tony Lin and Ethan Thomas and Aaron Nonalaya and A.J. Hintz. Zack Skrabacz and Wesley Paulo won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, for the Whalers.

    • Jake Stiger, William Michelson, Sean Bessette and Nathan Gonzales all won their singles matches in Stonington's 7-0 non-conference win over Westbrook. The doubles duos of Quinn Hamilton-Jack Ramsdell and Alex Mann-Shah Haider outlasted their opponents in three sets

    Girls' tennis

    • Mary Kathryn Taylor won at No. 1 singles and Yurina Shirai took her No. 4 singles match in three sets in East Lyme's 5-2 loss to Guilford.

    • Fitch swept Montville, 7-0, receiving singles wins all in straight sets from Samantha Cote, Sneha Kumar, Kavita Srirangam and Greysan Scherer.
