East Lyme puts Waterford's ECC Div. I baseball title hopes on hold

East Lyme — It wasn't lost on Trystan Levesque that his left arm could be responsible for slowing this Waterford-palooza of championships around here lately.

Levesque knew that the Lancers could clinch the Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I baseball title with a win Tuesday at Bridebrook Park. Maybe that's why Levesque spoke with a wry grin after he pitched a shutout, delivering East Lyme to a 2-0 win.

"We always want to beat Waterford," Levesque said. "It's the best thing ever."

It was even better this time around, especially given that Levesque was on the unfortunate end of a 1-0 loss to a Lancers earlier this season. No such problems Tuesday.

"Us and Waterford, it's always a rivalry, always competitive," he said. "We just came out on top today."

Levesque allowed five hits, one walk and struck out 10, including the side in the seventh.

"That one (the 1-0 loss to Waterford earlier this season) stung a little bit," Biggs said. "Like Trystan said (last week) we've lost in every way you can. That game was like a state tournament game."

Lost in the outcome was another beauty from Hartford-bound right-hander Jared Burrows, who allowed one earned run. Burrows lost to Ledyard 1-0 recently as well.

"That's the way it's been for the last couple of weeks," Waterford coach Art Peluso said. "But we're 10-5. We're pitching well. Their guy (Levesque) was the hard luck loser a couple of weeks ago. I thought he spotted his fastball well. But I thought Jared was just as good."

The Lancers (4-1 in the division) can still win the title outright but will have to win at Fitch on May 16. The Falcons (9-6, 3-2) can share the title by beating Waterford while the Vikings (9-7, 3-2) can make it a three-way celebration if Fitch wins by defeating Norwich Free Academy at Dodd Stadium that same day.

East Lyme snapped a scoreless tie in the fourth after Tommy Mason reached on an error. Owen Robbins doubled him to third and after an intentional walk and strikeout, Drew Menghi beat out an infield hit — a chopper in front of the plate — to score the only run Levesque needed.

Jake Schelkly's sacrifice fly scored Chris Malcom in the fifth to give the Vikings a 2-0 lead.

Waterford's first two runners — singles from Ryan Bakken and Cadin Maynard — reached in the fourth. But Levesque retired the next three hitters. The Lancers had two aboard with none out in the sixth and didn't score either.

"It's not like we didn't have chances," Peluso said. "We had the right guys coming up. In that situation you'd like to see a couple of hard balls put in play. But we didn't."
