Bye week makes for quiet week in The Day's state coaches' poll

It's probably going to take another two weeks before there’s much movement in The Day's Top 10 state coaches’ poll.

The high school football season has (already) reached its halfway point with most teams enjoying a bye either last weekend or this weekend. This week’s poll reflects that because half of the top 10 teams had the weekend off, resulting in minor changes after Week 5.

Top-ranked Hand (10), No. 2 St. Joseph (two) and No. 3 Greenwich (one) all have the same number of first place votes that they had last week.

The only other thing of note was that Ansonia (5-0), Sheehan (4-0) and Southington (4-1) switched places at the bottom of the top 10. Southington moved up two spots to eighth, pushing Ansonia down to ninth and Sheehan to 10th.

Norwich Free Academy (3-1) is the only area team that received a vote (one 13th-place vote). Killingly (4-0) is 13th.

Four Top 10 teams go on byes this weekend — Greenwich, No. 5 Newtown (5-0), Southington and Ansonia.

Some major shakeups should happen after Week 7 with two big FCIAC games being played on Saturday, Oct. 26. It starts with No. 7 Ridgefield at St. Joseph (1:30 p.m.), followed by No. 4 Darien at Greenwich (4 p.m.).
