Weston wins Class M title by beating Killingly at its own game

New Britain — On the final day of the football season, Killingly got to feel what every one of its opponents felt this season.

Weston Killingly-ied Killingly 27-6 in Saturday afternoon's CIAC Class M final at Willow Brook Park. The Trojans dominated up front and used two long second-half drives to drain the clock.

"They controlled the line of scrimmage," Killingly senior fullback-linebacker John Creswell said. "We couldn't handle that. We haven't had a team control the line of scrimmage on us all year, and they did that. Kudos to their lineman.

"Man, they really pushed us around."

Third-seeded Killingly finished the season 11-2.

It was the first state title for the No. 5 Trojans (12-1).

Killingly likes to use a punishing running attack that can take time off the clock. It averaged 260.2 yards and 6.2 yards per carry this season.

Weston held Killingly to 129 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries.

"We like to think that we're some pretty nice kids off the field," Trojans senior running back-linebacker Tyler Bower said. "We're pretty mean on the field.

"We like to hit people in the mouth and that was fun today. We got to hit them in mouth a little bit."

Weston stopped Killingly on three fourth-down plays.

"(Weston) beat us to the point of attack a lot of times," Killingly head coach Chad Neal said. "(Senior James) Goetz, their safety, he came up a lot (to the line) and made a lot of plays. He ran the alley. They read our tight end well today. Anywhere the tight end blocked, (Goetz) came up."

Senior Jackson Lopes ran 15 times for 67 yards and Jack Sharpe had 15 carries for 49 yards for Killingly.

The Trojans used Bower to mash Killingly. He ran 21 times for 99 yards and three touchdowns.

Goetz added 15 carries for 81 yards and completed 5 of 7 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Goetz's passing touchdown came on the game's first play. He faked a toss and threw a 50-yard pass to John Cassol to give Weston a 7-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game.

Killingly quarterback Jacob Nurse scored on a 2-yard run with 2 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked.

Bower ran for an 8-yard touchdown with 10:56 left in the first half. The extra point was blocked.

A short punt gave Weston the ball at the Killingly 42 with 3 minutes left in the half. Goetz threw a 34-yard pass to Jack Sawyer to give the Trojans first-and-goal at the Killingly 3. Bower ran for a touchdown on the next play to push Weston's lead to 20-6.

"That last touchdown before the half, the locker room at halftime, I've never been in a locker room so silent in my life," Creswell said.

The Trojans stopped Killingly on fourth down at their 20-yard line to start the second half. They got the ball with 10:05 left in the quarter.

Weston gradually drove 80 yards in 14 plays and ran on all but one of them. The drive took 7:01.

Bower ran nine times for 46 yards on that drive. He ended it with a 2-yard touchdown to give Weston a 27-6 lead with 3:04 remaining in the quarter.

"Man, that's frustrating," Neal said of the drive. "I know how others feel. That's the irony. It was tough. They were a physical team up front. As much as we saw them and scouted them, we couldn't account for how physical they were. Not only were they physical, you had to play them in space as well. They put you in a lot of one-on-one situations with their great athletes."

It was the second time in three seasons that Killingly played for the Class M title. It won it in 2017.

"We just played a better team," Creswell said. "It's sad (we lost), but that stuff happens. ... I think we still had a hell of a season."
