    Montville announces Class of 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

    Montville — Montville High School will induct five new members and one team into its fifth Athletic Hall of Fame class on Friday, Nov. 27, at the Mohegan Sun's Uncas Ballroom.

    Tanner Grove, Montville's football coach and Hall of Fame committee chairman, announced Tuesday that former-student athletes Jesse Sutherland, Jessica Bennett, Anthony Occhialini and John Szarzynski are new Class of 2020 Hall of Fame inductees along with former baseball coach and athletic director Phil Orbe and the 2000 Montville baseball team.

    Tickets for the dinner and ceremony are $55 and must be purchased by Nov. 20 (tickets will not be sold at the door).     Following is a capsule look at the honorees:

    Jesse Sutherland (Class of 2010): One of the best three-sport athletes in school history (football, basketball and baseball), playing in state championship games in football and baseball as a senior. Was a three-year starter in basketball and football, earning All-ECC football honors twice, and was a four-year starter at shortstop for the baseball team, which won three ECC divisional titles, an ECC tournament title and the 2010 Class M state championship. He was a three-time All-ECC pick and a two-time Class M all-state selection, and still holds school career records in games played (104) and stolen bases (81) while ranking second in home runs (21), hits (129), runs scores (127), RBIs (85) and walks (65). He later played in the 2011 NJCAA World Series with Manchester Community College and made the all-tournament team. Sutherland resides in Montville with his wife and son and works for Cross Sound Ferry.

    Jessica Bennett (Class of 2009): Another three-sport star (cross country, wrestling, outdoor track). She was a multiple All-ECC athlete who was voted team MVP twice in cross country, twice in outdoor track and once in wrestling. She earned fifth place in the 2008 wrestling Class S state tournament, becoming the second female to place in a Connecticut state class tournament, then placed second in the 2009 Class M tournament, which is still the highest place ever achieved by a female athlete, becoming the first female wrestler in history to qualify for the State Open. Bennett, a two-time All-Academic pick, had more than 100 career victories and was a two-time female All-American. She graduated from the University of New Haven, still resides in Montville and is a recruit in the Connecticut State Police Academy.

    Anthony Occhialini (Class of 2009): A four-year starter as the boys' soccer goalkeeper, Occhialini was a three-time All-ECC pick, a two-time all-state pick, and was named to the All-New England and All-America teams as a senior. He still holds school records for saves (402) and shutouts (23). Went on to play at Division I Central Connecticut, finishing with 33 career wins and helping the Blue Devils win the 2011 Northeast Conference championship. He later spent three years as an assistant coach at the Coast Guard Academy and recently completed his first season as Montville boys' soccer coach. He teaches at Mohegan School and lives in Montville.

    John Szarzynski (Class of 1967): Szarzynski was part of the first class to spend four years at Montville High School and earned the maximum of 12 letters in football, basketball and baseball. Played offensive guard and linebacker and helped the Indians share the 1966 ECC title, the first conference title in any sport in school history. He was an outfielder in baseball and guard in basketball, earning All-ECC honors in football and baseball as a senior. John earned a degree in computer science at Charter Oak State College and spent 45 years as an electronics mechanic, electrical engineer and electrical designer at Tracor and Electric Boat. He remained active in local sports as a football, basketball and softball official for more than 37 years. He retired in 2015 and still lives in Montville.

    Phil Orbe (Class of 1988): Orbe returned to his alma mater and spent 24 years as a teach, coach and administrator. As baseball coach, he coached 25 all-state players, had 57 play collegiately and five Major League Baseball draft picks. His teams won three sportsmanship awards, 11 ECC regular season titles, six ECC tournament titles, six state championship appearances and three Class M state titles in 2006, 2010 and 2011). He retired with a career record of 380-133 (.741 winning percentage). Phil still resides in Montville with his wife and three daughters, is the current field manager of the Mystic Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League and recently accepted a position as athletic director in New London.

    Montville baseball team (2000): The Indians won the ECC Small Division and ECC tournament and finished third in the final state poll with a 22-2 record while outscoring their opponents 237-91. The team featured 11 seniors who won two ECC regular-season titles, three ECC tournament titles and a state runner-up finish in 1998. The group included captain Jeremy Terni (inaugural MHS Athletic HOF class and MLB draft choice), who was voted the consensus state player of the year. Other team member included Van Hess, Matt Mauro, Matt Jullarine, Dan Velasquez, Ryan Casagranda, Mickey Dodge, Alan Frausini, Aaron Meredith, Tom Cullen, Frank Longo, Mike DeCecco, Khris Garcia, Eric Bushor, Nick Bianchi and Zach Kopp. Orbe was the head coach and was assisted by Brent Southworth, Ted Richmond, Chris Pomroy and Gary Ballestrini, along with support staff James Murno and Kate Jurczik.
