Checking in with Liv: "I loved going to Norwich Tech. I like that I know everybody, an I know you and you know me kind of thing. I love the atmosphere at Norwich Tech. I definitely blossomed in that school. I'd try to stay quiet, but you have to blossom."

What you need to know about Liv: Lopez, who also plays volleyball at Norwich Tech, was looking forward to playing singles this year after mainly playing doubles previously. She only joined the tennis team as a sophomore, but what she lacked in experience she made up for with competitiveness. "Olivia is an energetic, fierce competitor — energetic about tennis and volleyball and most likely would have been a captain this year," Norwich Tech tennis coach Emily Hayes said. Lopez was a defensive specialist for the volleyball team, which earned a berth in the Connecticut Technical Conference tournament last season. "(Playing) volleyball and tennis, they are both so different from each other. In volleyball you're playing for a team, helping out your own team," Lopez said. "The other one is focusing on you; you don't have to depend on anyone but yourself. ... You're a lot more fit in tennis. Our coach would tell us, 'You can't eat McDonald's.' OK!" Lopez said to her fellow seniors: "We played a good game. I wish we got to play this season," while mentioning late volleyball and tennis teammate Christine White, who died in a car accident in May, 2018, at the age of 17. "We usually play for her and it's always been for her," Lopez said of White. "The game has always been hers." Lopez was voted Class Clown and Class Flirt at Norwich Tech. She enjoys hiking, dogs, lasagna and the Netflix series "Stranger Things." She grew up admiring Hannah Montana, as well as her sister Melissa, who attended Norwich Free Academy. Lopez, from Norwich, originally wanted to attend NFA, as well, but said her mom directed her toward Norwich Tech, where she chose the hairdressing track. "She always put a smile on my face," Hayes said of Lopez. "Even though we didn't play this year, in the hallways she would always yell out my name and say she couldn't wait for tennis. It is such a shame that my four seniors were unable to compete."
