Area teams set for CIAC semifinal games

Tuesday will be a busy day in southeastern Connecticut high school sports as four Eastern Connecticut Conference teams will play in CIAC semifinal tournament games.

The top-seeded East Lyme girls' lacrosse team will be the only one of the four to play at home as they'll play No. 4 Barlow in a Class M semifinal at 6 p.m. The Vikings (15-0) won the Class M championship in 2019 — last year's spring season was canceled due to the pandemic. The Falcons (17-2) are South-West Conference champions.

Fourth-seeded Waterford will play top-seeded East Catholic in the second game of a Class M baseball doubleheader at Muzzy Field in Bristol at 7 p.m. Waterford (19-2) has won a state-record 11 state titles, including the last Class M title in 2019.

The Eagles (23-0) are ranked No. 1 in the GameTimeCT/New Haven Register poll and led by left-hander Frank Mozzicato, a UConn commit who is ranked 51st in MLB.com’s Draft Prospect Rankings. He had a 30-inning no-hit streak broken up during Saturday’s 19-1 rout of Weston. He threw just 74 pitches, thus making him available for Tuesday’s game.

Sixth-seeded Ledyard plays No. 2 St. Joseph in the second game of a Class L softball doubleheader at West Haven at 6:30 p.m. The Colonels (18-3) are aiming for their eighth state title (they last won in 1996). The Cadets (21-1) have won four this century, including the 2018 Class M title.

No. 10 Stonington plays at third-seeded New Fairfield in a Class S girls’ lacrosse game at a time to be announced. Stonington (11-5) is after its second state title (it won the class in 2014). The Rebels (15-3) have won the previous three S championships.

The top-ranked East Lyme boys’ lacrosse team plays host to No. 4 Weston on Wednesday night at 6. East Lyme (16-0) won its only state title in 2004. The Trojans are 15-4 and lost in the 2019 Class S final.

Tickets for all tournament games will only be available digitally in order to assist with compliance in social distancing requirements. They may be purchased at https://gofan.co/app/school/CIAC
