Top-ranked St. Joseph maintains lead over Darien in The Day's Top 10 poll

The Day's Top 10 high school football state coaches’ poll was going to get mixed up this week following a weekend that featured so many marquee games.

Starting at the top, top-ranked St. Joseph received an extra first-place vote this week to give it seven of 13. It had been No. 1 through the first two weeks despite second-ranked Darien receiving seven both times.

Two voters flipped their first place vote from Darien to St. Joseph after the Cadets knocked off then-No. 10 Windsor, 45-22, last Friday.

Another voter flipped from St. Joseph to the Blue Wave after Darien beat then-No. 5 Newtown last Friday, 27-14, in a rematch of the 2019 CIAC Class LL final won by the Nighthawks.

The teams are scheduled to play at St. Joseph on Saturday, Oct. 30. Southeast Connecticut residents can see Darien play locally this Friday night when it travels to Norwich Free Academy at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on www.theday.com

Shelton (3-0) and Ansonia (3-0) both make their Top 10 season debuts. Shelton is seventh after routing then-No. 3 Greenwich last Friday, 35-14.

Ansonia is ninth after it downed Holy Cross last Friday, 28-7. It was the Chargers' 98th straight Naugatuck Valley League win.

Xavier (ninth) and Windsor (10th) dropped out of the Top 10 after losses last Friday.

Fitch (2-0) received two 14th-place votes this week for 16 points. Ledyard (3-0) received one 15th-place vote for seven points.
