Waterford boys capture 7th straight Medium Division title

Colchester — The Waterford High School boys' tennis team doubled its pleasure Monday.

The Lancers defeated Bacon Academy 7-0 to win their seventh straight Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division title under coach Ralph DiSaia.

It was also DiSaia's 100th career win. He is 100-8.

"Quite honestly, as I told the kids today, I couldn't have done it without them," DiSaia said. "I didn't win the points. There's a lot of commitment and effort that goes into this from the kids as well as the support of the administration.

"They've been supportive of what it takes to run a good program. A lot of (the success) is due to the involvement of parents. They cart their kids around for all the offseason work they do."

Rocco Devona, Alex Anisimov, Joel Simonson, Mason Benoit and Dana Aing won at singles for Waterford (10-1, 7-0). The winning doubles teams were Will Perkins and John Stockman and Charles Maryeski and Michael Reisfeld.

"We run a no-cut program," DiSaia said. "Last year, we had 39 kids and this year we have 32. If they're willing to put forth the effort and training and work as hard as I can, they're a part of the team. That adds a lot of team spirit. And from those kids that might have been cut, they're now starters. I think a no-cut program really pays off greatly. It's always been depth that has been our strength.

"I give the kids all the credit in the world. I just happen to be the one going along for the ride."
