    ECC tennis tournament roundup

    Stonington - East Lyme's 15th-seeded doubles team of Robin Keller and Hanfa Sultan pulled off a pair of upsets to reach the semifinals of the Eastern Connecticut Conference girls' tennis tournament Thursday at Stonington High School.Keller and Sultan stunned Woodstock Academy's No. 2 team of Siana Green and Gen Cohen in the first round, 8-3 (pro set). They then defeated No. 10 Katherine Byron and Courtney Onorato of Stonington in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-1.The East Lyme duo will play No. 3 Emily Cusack and Colleen Kluberdanz of Stonington in today's semifinals at 3 p.m. The other semi will feature Waterford's top-seeded team of Christine Nykyforchyn and Rachel Kreit against No. 4 Haley Mather and Ali Risley of Windham.Nykyforchyn and Kreit survived a scare in the quarters, rallying for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 8 Danielle Small and Julia Vitale of Fitch.Today's singles quarterfinals and semis will also be played today with the quarters starting at 3 p.m. Both singles and doubles championship matches will be played on Saturday at 11 a.m.Boys¦ Defending singles champion Brandon Roode of Griswold won a pair of matches and all eight top seeds advanced to the quarterfinals of the ECC tournament at Waterford High School.Roode, a sophomore, lost only five games in posting his two wins. He will face No. 8 Ben Mazzarese in today's quarterfinals at 3 p.m. No. 4 Neal Jawadekar of East Lyme will face No. 5 Kevin Fontaine of Montville in the other quarterfinal in the top half of the draw while the bottom half will feature No. 2 Christian Toth of Woodstock against No. 7 Rocco Devona of Waterford and No.3 James Lagrotteria of East Lyme against No. 6 Elijah Mena of Ledyard.In doubles, there was one minor upset as the No. 5 team of East Lyme's Chad McDonnell and Ashwin Maheshwari defeated No. 4 Alex Bonnassieux and Greg Conact of Fitch in the quarterfinals 6-3, 6-4.McDonnell and Maheshwari will meet top-seeded Will Perkins and John Stockman of Waterford in one quarterfinal while No. 2 Dan Banker and Matt Paige of Stonington will face No. 3 Jay and Adam McCaffrey of East Lyme.
