    H.S. roundup: St. Bernard football rolls past Stamford Academy

    Montville - John Malchiodi returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown and St. Bernard/Norwich Tech broke the game open with a 27-point second quarter to defeat Stamford Academy 48-6 in a nonleague football game Friday night.

    Quarterback Phil Jenkins had a big night for the Saints (2-3), passing for three touchdowns and rushing for a fourth. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 172 yards, connecting with Malchiodi (28 yards), Sean Hurley (62 yards) and Jared Kobyluck (30 yards) for TDs, all in the second quarter.

    Jenkins also had a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter while Matt Derosier added a 15-yard touchdown run and Kevin MacDonald went 20 yards for the game's final score in the third quarter.

    St. Bernard's other points came on a safety by Will Ryan and four Caleb Violette extra points.

    Stamford Academy is 0-4.

    In other games:

    • No. 7 New London led East Lyme 6-0 after one quarter of their Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division game when play was suspended by lightning. The Whalers and Vikings will resume play at the start of the second quarter in New London today at 6:30 p.m.

    • Three games were postponed until today: Stonington at Ledyard, 1 p.m.; Waterford at Bacon Academy, 2 p.m.; and Killingly at Fitch, 6:30 p.m.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Unbeaten Newtown defeated East Lyme 3-1 in a battle of Top 10 programs, 25-21, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19.

    "They're going to be very good in the (Class LL) tournament," East Lyme coach Jack Biggs said of No. 10 Newtown (12-0). We put them on the schedule to play good teams and get ready for the tournament, and this was a good battle."

    The No. 7 Vikings (10-2), the reigning Class L champion, visits Newtown for their final match of the regular season on Oct. 28.

    Emily Passman led East Lyme with 14 digs while Raeann Nesta had 24 kills and three blocks and Kayla Fobian finished with 10 digs.

    • Kaylyn Levine had 14 kills, Melissa Godere 23 assists and Carly Hust 10 service points as Norwich Free Academy defeated Griswold 25-18, 25-18, 25-15. The Wildcats are 9-4. Samantha Rentz had seven kills and 11 digs for the Wolverines (3-9) and Sabjola Qosja added 17 digs.

    • Jackie Lockett had 29 assists and Kelsey Armstrong 19 kills as Fitch defeated Waterford 25-20, 25-19, 25-18. Maura Brown added 16 service points and Haley Cooper 12 service points for the Falcons (9-3) while Christine Hadfield had nine kills and Kelli Connors 18 assists for the Lancers (6-8).

    • Plainfield swept Bacon Academy 25-10, 25-20, 25-14. Hannah Byrne had six blocks and two kills for the Bobcats (3-10) while Charisse Townsend added three blocks and three kills and Makaila Kowalsky had four digs and 10 service points.

    • Hale-Ray of East Haddam defeated Old Lyme 25-16, 25-15, 25-18 in the Shoreline Conference. Julia Crespo led the Wildcats with five aces and two kills.

    • Ledyard improved to 7-6 with a 25-5, 25-8, 25-7 win over Wheeler. The Lions are 0-10.

    H.S. swimming

    • Renee Harms (200 IM, 100 backstroke) and Jackie Kokomoor (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) won two events apiece and each swam on two winning relay teams as Fitch defeated Windham/Lyman Memorial 85-67 in the ECC. The Falcons (6-1, 6-1) won every event.

    H.S. field hockey

    • Hannah Long had three goals and an assist as NFA beat Windham, 7-2, in the ECC. Emily Devito had a goal and an assist for the Wildcats

    (3-7, 2-4) and Sydney Rice, Ellie Swanson and Alexa Franchetti scored.

    Boys' soccer

    • Edisson Salazar scored in the second half as Abbott Tech of Danbury edged Grasso Tech, 1-0, in a Constitution State Conference game. Abbott is 9-1. Ralph Abbott had 14 saves for the Eagles (5-5).
