    Local roundup: Baton lifts Norwich Tech past Grasso Tech

    Norwich - Drake Baton, who tied the game by converting an offensive rebound with under a minute to play, hit two clutch free throws in the final 20 seconds to give Norwich Tech a 47-45 boys' basketball victory over Grasso Tech on Thursday night in the Constitution State Conference East Division.

    The Warriors (1-4) rallied from a 33-21 halftime deficit behind Drake, who scored a game-high 22 points, including a 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter that tied the game at 39-39.

    Ashbow Sebastian added 10 points for Norwich Tech while Mikey Attinello made four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points for Grasso Tech (0-3).

    In other games:

    • Ryan Pambuku scored 11 of his game-high 26 points during Plainfield's 28-point outburst in the second quarter and the Panthers went on to hand St. Bernard its first loss, 62-44, in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Small Division. Petey Aldrich had 13 points and nine rebounds for the Saints (3-1, 2-1) while John Lorange added 12 for Plainfield (3-1, 1-1).

    • Dylan Sheffield made five 3-pointers and finished with 19 points as Old Lyme rolled to a 65-49 win over Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference. Colin Devlin added 17 points, Andrew Tyrol 13 (three 3-pointers) and George Logan 10 for the Wildcats (2-2), who broke the game open in the second quarter when they outscored Westbrook 18-6.

    • Max Alden scored 24 points as Old Saybrook, which survived a four-point fourth quarter, scored 12 points in overtime to defeat Morgan of Clinton, 60-53, in the Shoreline Conference. Michael Barrett added 10 points for the Rams (2-2) while Tyler Anglin led Morgan (0-4) with 21.

    Girls' basketball

    • Plainfield made six 3-pointers in a hot-shooting first half that resulted in a 36-13 halftime and led to a 57-43 win over St. Bernard in the ECC Small Division. Hailey Griffin scored 20 points, making three of her four 3-pointers in the first half for Plainfield (4-2, 3-0) while Kayla Paris had 20 points, five steals and five rebounds for the Saints (3-3, 1-2) and Casey Sullivan finished with nine points and 11 rebounds.

    • Hartford University outscored Grasso Tech 15-2 in the second quarter and defeated the Eagles 37-15. Melissa Dolenchuck score five points for Grasso (0-6).

    Hockey

    • Milford Co-op scored four first-period goals and cruised to an 8-1 win over Fitch-East Lyme-Ledyard on Wednesday night at Conn College. Peter Gonski scored an unassisted goal for Fitch.

    Football

    • Kyle McKinnon (New London, Class L), Alex Couture (Bacon Academy, Class M) and Pat Kirkwood (Fitch, Class L) were named to various All State teams earlier this week. The list provided to The Day was incomplete in Wednesday's edition.
