Rams' Girls' Track Claims Third-Straight SLC Title

The Old Saybrook girls' outdoor track squad won its third consecutive Shoreline Conference crown on May 23 after competing in the Shoreline Conference Championship at Haddam-Killingworth High School.

If you talk to any track coach on the shoreline and ask them what team they’re itching to beat, most will answer Old Saybrook. The Rams proved yet again why that’s the common response as they won their third-straight Shoreline Conference title on May 23 at Haddam-Killingworth High School by scoring 150.5 points.

“We had some real stellar performances—the kids really rose to the occasion,” said Coach Peter Capezzone. “I thought we had the capability of scoring 160 points, but putting it on paper and doing it on the track are totally different things. And this is a day when the heat came out and it got hot, but the kids were great—I don’t know what else to say.”

Prevailing in the competition was Katie Beezer in the 100 high hurdles (16.08), who as a junior hasn’t known anything but winning so far in her outdoor career.

“I think it was just about preparing way ahead of time—my coaches have been pushing us, last week [Coach Capezzone] told us it was championship mode, and we’ve been pushing ourselves and I think it shows, even under the hot circumstances,” said Beezer. “I was thinking I personally had a chance [to win], but at the same time, I didn’t want to be really sure of myself—things can happen. It was great I won and I really pushed through.”

Cori Reid also prevailed in the 400 (59.19) and javelin (100-0)—both school records, as did the 4x400 relay team of Reid, Kim Glorioso, Erin Daley, and Kiran Khosla (4:09.41), which set a meet and school record.

Also scoring points for the Rams was the 4x800 relay team of Mary Kate Czepiel, Erin Daley, Alexis Henry, and Alison Daley (2nd, 10:11.99).

“It was a nice way to end the season; I thought a lot of the girls really stepped up, put all their effort in, and we would’ve never won if everyone didn’t do their part. It worked out really well,” said senior Henry.

Adding points was the 4x100 relay team of Glorioso, Jenna Hansel, Khosla, and Ashley Vigorita (2nd, 51.95); Reid in the 800 (2nd, 2:28.76); Eden Wright in the discus (2nd, 87-08) and javelin (3rd, 93-9); Henry in the 800 (3rd, 2:29.17) and 1,600 (3rd, 5:30.72); Glorioso in the 200 (2nd, 27.18) and 100 (4th, 13.38); Khosla in the 400 (5th, 1:03.08); Beezer in the long jump (4th, 15-08¾) and 300 hurdles (4th, 49.76); Erin Daley in the 800 (5th, 2:29.63); Jenny Gamble in the discus (3rd, 86-7) and shot put (4th, 27-11½); and Alyssa Giegerich in the pole vault (3rd, 9-0).

“I just think the kids knew what their jobs were and they didn’t complain,” said Capezzone. “They went out there and went about their business and are a good professional group. It speaks a lot of our leadership; there are eight or nine senior girls that know how to win and they know what it takes to win—they go about their business and do what they have to do.”
