NFA names Eric Swallow its new athletic director

Norwich — Eric Swallow, athletic director at Southington High School since 2008 and a former assistant at UConn under legendary men's soccer coach Joe Morrone, was named athletic director at Norwich Free Academy on Monday night.

Swallow replaces Gary Makowicki, who announced his retirement after the 2014-15 academic year.

Swallow will be formally introduced during a press conference on Tuesday at NFA.

Swallow, who lives in Old Saybrook, coached soccer and taught health education at New Canaan High School before taking over at Southington, which boasts one of the most respected high school athletic programs in the state, and like NFA is a Class LL school.

David J. Klein, head of school at NFA, said in a statement released by the school on Monday night, "For us, it's about vision, focused leadership, and sincere commitment to the forward progress of NFA's athletic program. Eric Swallow is a highly-skilled leader, and he will be an immediate asset to our Campus Leadership Team.

"I am certain that he will quickly establish positive, trust-based relationships with NFA coaches and our student-athletes and their families. He believes strongly in providing an athletic program that nurtures student character, community service, sportsmanship, and leadership.

"I am thrilled to have him as a member of Team NFA. The strong tradition of Wildcat excellence and pride is in great hands with Eric Swallow."
