    Fitch announces second Athletic Hall of Fame class

    Groton – New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, who started for the National League in the 2013 All-Star Game, headlines a list of 17 inductees when Fitch High School holds its second Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the St. Mary Mother of Redeemer Banquet Hall.

    The other members of the Class of 2015 are Barbara Dupuis Ellis, Earl Rowley, Elliott Johnson, Charles Scott, Don Langworthy, Ronald Hughes, Paul David Silva, Gerald Henderson, Joe Addison, Alice Hunter, Tami Hyde, Chris Stuart, Neal Currie, Brenda O'Connell O'Hazelwood, Anthony Wilson and Jessica Schenk.

    Athletic director Marc Romano said the induction ceremony, dinner and reception will start at 1 p.m. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased in the main office at Fitch from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. or during football and volleyball games. For more information contact Bernie Nasser at bnasser20@gmail.com.

    Following is a capsule look the inductees, with graduating class in parentheses:

    Barbara Dupuis Ellis (1935) – was captain of the basketball and cheerleading teams who became executive secretary to the general manager at Electric Boat. She died in 2007.

    Earl Rowley (1935) – earned seven varsity letters in football, baseball, track and basketball, captaining the football and baseball teams. ... lead the track team in points (1935). ... a class president as a junior and senior ... served as Ledyard's state representative during the 1953, '55 and '57 sessions of the Connecticut General Assembly. ... died in 1995.

    Elliott Johnson (1943) – lettered in football and baseball ... worked at Electric Boat for 40 years ... a lifetime member at Shennecossett Golf Course. ... died in 2013.

    Charles Scott (1948) – lettered in football and baseball and was class president three years ... was all-conference in football and track, setting a state record in the 200 dash. ... played football at Brown University ... worked a Pfizer for 35 years ... died in 2003.

    Don Langworthy (1955) – starred in football, baseball and track.

    Ronald Hughes (1956) – lettered in basketball, track (four times) and football. ... was all-conference four times in track and a state champion three times in the 100, 220 and long jump. ... still holds the school record in 100 (9.9 seconds). ... all-conference three times in football and honorable mention all-state pick as senior. ... served as class president, "F Club" president and served on senior executive board. ... attended Livingston College.

    Paul David Silva (1962) – lettered in football, basketball and track (four times) ... was co-captain of 1961 football team and selected to Class A all-state team. ... set school records in shot put (49 feet, 10 inches) and discus (126 feet).

    Gerald Henderson (1973) – Three-year basketball star and program's first 1,000-point scorer. ... named to 1973 all-state team after leading Falcons to state semifinals. ... played basketball at South Carolina State.

    Joe Addison (1977) – lettered in football, indoor and outdoor track, leading Fitch to a state football championship in 1976 (and No. 10 national ranking), rushing for 1,655 yards and earning first-team all-state honors. ... helped Fitch win prestigious Hartford Public Invite and place second in State Open track. ... played football at UConn.

    Alice Hunter (1978) – lettered nine times and captain the softball, tennis and basketball teams ... Dr. Hunter is an orthopedic surgeion at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

    Tami Hyde (1980) – member of the school's first volleyball team in 1979 ... also lettered three times in basketball and softball. ... was a three-time SAC All-Star in softball and a member of the 1980 all-state team.

    Chris Stuart (1984) – lettered in baseball, basketball, soccer and football, earning football MVP honors in 1983, his only year playing the sport. ... attended Davidson College, playing baseball for four years and earning MVP honors as senior when he led the team in hitting. ... is currently Director of Sales for Raycom Sports/ The ACC Network in North Carolina.

    Neal Currie (1984) – lettered in basketball and track. ... was named all-state in both sports, scoring 1,000 career points in basketball and holding school record in high jump ... played basketball at Siena College.

    Brenda O'Connell O'Hazelwood (1990) – earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. ...was all-state in 3,200 and school record-holder in the two mile. ... named Fitch's Female Athlete of the Year in 1990 and attended Brown.

    Anthony Wilson (1996) – earned 11 varsity letters while captaining football, basketball and baseball teams . ... named to all-state team twice in football ... holds state record for career interceptions (22). ... was quarterback of Fitch's 1994 unbeaten football team.

    Jessica Schenk (2000) – earned 12 varsity letters in cross country, indoor and outdoor track ... won New England 3,200 championship and the 1999 State Open cross title ... named 2000 Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year in track and 2000 Fitch Female Athlete of the Year ... attended Columbia.

    Matt Harvey (2007) – a four-team ECC all-star and three-time all-state pick in baseball. ... earned All-America honors as senior pitcher and was named Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year after going 6-1 with a 0.64 ERA with 112 strikeouts in only 54.2 innings ... rated nation's No. 1 prospect by Baseball American in 2007. ... set school career records with 315 strikeouts, 21 victories and a 1.08 ERA. ... attended North Carolina ... was drafted by New York Mets in first round (No. 7 overall) of 2010 draft and is currently in Mets' starting rotation.
