Stonington — Tyler Fidrych scored on a penalty kick with 7 minutes, 53 seconds left in the second half to lift the Stonington High School boys' soccer team to a 3-2 win over Fitch in the championship game of the Josh Piver Cup on Saturday.

Billy deCastro's goal with 4:23 left in the half gave Stonington the lead, but Fitch's Sebastian Duffy scored with 1:38 left in the half for a 1-1 tie. Duffy's second goal seven minutes into the scond half gave Fitch (3-2) a 2-1 lead, but Stonington's Sam Montalto tied the game at 2-2 with 8:52 left in the game.

Fidrych assisted on the first two goals for Stonington (5-0) and teammate Peter Fernholz made three saves. Ramiro Zavala had nine saves for Fitch. 

Girls' soccer

• Ashley Spreng scored the game-winning goal in double overtime and Frankie Foster finished with 26 saves as Fitch captured the Piver Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over Chariho at Palmer Field in Stonington.

Chariho led 1-0 at halftime before Fitch's Madison Lynch scored a second-half goal to tie it. Spreng scored in sudden death, taking a cross just inside the 18-yard line and converting it.

Fitch is 2-3, having played three double-overtime games so far, including a 2-1 win over Westerly in the Piver Cup semifinals.

"It was a good time for us," Fitch coach Jasmine Zubek said of the victory. "We had come off a loss to Woodstock (Thursday, 5-0), a loss to Stonington (4-3 in double overtime Monday). This put them in a positive mindset for next week. I'm very hopeful this is going to give them some confidence going into futire games, for sure."

• Carley Constantine scored two goals and Annelise McGee added another as Stonington defeated Westerly 3-1 in the consolation game of the Piver Cup. Vanessa Benjamin was credited with a pair of assists for Stonington (2-3) and Tori LoPresto made one save in the victory.

• Skylar Frost scored a pair of first-half goals, one on a penalty kick, and Williams led 4-0 at halftime on the way to a 6-0 victory over Rocky Hill (R.I.) in a Housatonic Valley Athletic League game. Morgan Pill added a goal and an assist and Wendy Fader, Sarah Cole and Jackie Leake also scored for Williams. Olivia Guinan made six saves to earn the victory.

• Old Lyme beat North Branford 2-1 in a Shoreline Conference game on Friday. Mackenzie Machnik and Maddie McCulloch scored goals for Old Lyme (3-0, 2-0).

Girls' cross country

• The Williams School finished first in a 5K cross country invitational as part of the school's Fall Sports Day, finishing with 19 points to top Fishers Island, Providence Country Day and Watkinson. Williams junior Mary Madaus was first in 23 minutes, 36 seconds, Ella Adin-Atherton was third (26:55), Grace Cassineri fourth (27:37), Anna Terry fifth (30:34) and Emerson McAraw sixth (30:43).

Boys' cross country

• Philip Knowlton was second in 21:01 as Williams finished second in its own cross country invitational with 47 points. Other top finishers for the Blues were Hunter Dolphin, sixth (21:54); Gabriel Frommer, ninth (23:22); Jackson Meisner 14th (24:45); and Jadiel Thomas, 16th (25:24).

Volleyball

• NFA stayed unbeaten with a 25-13, 25-14, 25-21 win over Plainfield on Friday. Sarah Ericson had 19 assists, Maddy Allen had five aces and 10 digs and Kennedy Jakan had 12 kills and three aces for NFA (3-0).

Field hockey

• Fitch lost to Woodstock Academy 2-1 in an ECC game on Friday. Jessica Russo scored for Fitch (1-4, 0-3) with an assist from Bridget O'Leary. Hailie Kesterson made eight saves for Fitch.
