    Local roundup: Fitch knocks off Guilford in Class L softball

    Guilford — Grace Cosmopoulos hit an RBI single as No. 14 Fitch made the run stand up as it edged No. 3 Guilford, 1-0, in a Class L second round softball game on Wednesday.

    Charlotte Cabral pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Grace Jenkins added two hits for the Falcons (15-9), which will play No. 6 Avon in Friday’s quarterfinals at Fisher Meadows Softball Fields. The Falcons downed No. 11 Berlin, 9-0, in its second round game.

    In other games:

    • Ava Roth hit a walk-off double to score Grace Phaneuf as No. 5 Old Lyme edged No. 12 Coginchaug, 4-3, in a Class S second round game between Shoreline Conference rivals. Emma Bayor hit a solo home run and struck out four in two innings of relief to earn the win, Victoria Gage allowed four hits over five innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts and Roth doubled twice for the Wildcats (19-6), who will play at No. 4 Lyman Memorial in Friday’s quarterfinals at a time to be announced.

    • Kassidy LaTour had two doubles, a home run that was the 100th hit of her two-year career, three RBI and two runs to pace No. 4 Lyman Memorial past No. 20 Thomaston, 10-6, in a Class S second round game. Loretta Svedarsky had two hits, including a double, with two RBI and a run, Rayne Bobbi hit two doubles with two RBI and a run and Rylee Benway went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Bulldogs (18-5). Also, Kelsey Dunnack added a triple, run and RBI and Lena-Maria Byers singled with a run and an RBI.

    • Madison Hinkley pitched a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts as No. 6 Somers shutout No. 11 St. Bernard, 4-0, in a Class S second round game. Aubree Nygaard singled to break up a no-hitter in the top of the seventh for the Saints (14-8).

    • Madison Waltke homered and Morgan Tainter went 2-for-3 in No. 15 NFA's 7-6 loss to No. 18 Norwalk in the Class LL first round on Tuesday. The Wildcats finish 14-9.

    Girls' tennis

    • Callie Bass, Elaina Morosky and Sam Tan didn't drop a point as top-seeded Old Lyme rolled past No. 9 Cromwell, 7-0, in a Class S quarterfinal. Abby Sicuranza won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats (21-0), who also received doubles wins from the teams of Livie Bass/Alexis Fenton, Aggie and Beatrice Hunt and Izzy Reynolds/Olivia Schaedler. Old Lyme will host No. 4 Litchfield in Thursday's semifinals at noon. Litchfield edged No. 5 East Catholic, 4-3, in its quarterfinal.

    • Maddie Hahn, Grace Duggan, Maddie Gonzalez and Mia Lewandowski all won their respective singles matches as top-seeded Stonington downed No. 8 Rocky Hill, 7-0, in a Class M quarterfinal. Katie Johnstone-Ekaterina Snegovskikh, Erin Motherway-Emily Fulling and Marcella Hamm-Lauren Buckley all won in doubles for the Bears (17-1), which will host No. 5 Weston in Friday’s semifinals at 1:30 p.m. The Trojans beat No. 13 Waterford, 5-2, in their quarterfinal.

    Boys’ lacrosse

    • Top-seeded Waterford beat No. 16 Old Lyme, 17-8, in a Class S first round game. The ECC tournament champion Lancers (16-3) will host No. 8 Haddam-Killingworth in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 3 p.m. The Cougars beat No. 9 Tolland in their first round game, 7-1.

    Anthony Stone scored seven goals, Jackson Huta had five goals and four assists, C.J. Landry had two goals and three assists, Trevor Stringer had two goals and two assists, Jake Kozlowski made 10 saves, Terrance Silva had a goal and John Zimmermann and Griffen Neal had assists for Waterford. Nick Cox and Sam Mullaney had three goals each and Mason Bussmann and Brendan O'Brien each scored a goal for Old Lyme (9-10).

    • Second-seeded Ellington scored all its goals in the second half to rally and beat No. 15 Stonington, 6-3, in a Class S first round game. Cameron Elenteny, Jake Flynn and Ethan Mahoney all scored for the Bears (11-9), who led 1-0 at the half. Will Banfield also had 22 saves.

    • No. 10 Notre Dame of West Haven topped No. 7 East Lyme, 20-8. Drew Sager had two goals and two assists, Sawyer Tighe had three goals and Sean McCusker had two goals and an assist for East Lyme (11-7). Also, Anthony Gesino scored and Mason Gallo had 10 saves.

    Track and field

    • Fitch’s Derek Osbourne placed sixth in the pole vault (11 feet, 6 inches) at the CIAC Class L championships. Hillhouse won the meet with 111.5 points and Fitch finished 10th (22). Thomas Forde (800 meters, 1:58.58) and Damon Haley (shot put, 46-7.75) both had fourth-place finishes for Fitch.

    Girls' golf

    • Host NFA won the Wildcat Invitational on Tuesday with a score of 206. East Lyme was second at 234 followed by Woodstock (255) and Waterford (260). NFA teammates Molly Plecan and Keira Kotula shared medalist honors at 45 and Sarah Healy of East Lyme shot a 52.
